Chapter 264 You Can Hide It for a While, But Not Forever
Sharon didn't dig into it and just kept the convo going.
After some back-and-forth and weighing the ups and downs, Seb decided to throw some cash into Sharon's lab.
The party wrapped up around ten. Sharon and Lavern stood at the restaurant door, waving Seb and the other moneybags goodbye.
Seb's secretary this time was a dude named Rufus Warren. Rufus got scooped up by Silvercrest Group four years back and got groomed by Paul, picking up his work habits.
On the ride back, Rufus couldn't help but say, "Ms. Roach is both hot and smart. Bet she's got a line of guys after her!"
Seb was buried in a doc but glanced up when he heard that.
"You planning to make a move on her?"
Rufus quickly backpedaled, "Nah, no way. She wouldn't look twice at a guy like me."
Seb's face stayed blank as he went back to his doc.
Sure, the money Sharon was making from her latest drug could set her up for life, putting her way out of most guys' leagues.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed.
Seeing it was Rebecca, Seb swiped to answer. Rebecca's voice came through, "Seb, I was out shopping and can't pick between two dresses. I posted the pics on your Facebook. Can you help me choose?"
Seb opened Facebook and checked out the pics Rebecca sent.
One was a yellow V-neck silk mermaid dress, classy and soft. The other was a red strapless short dress, sexy and bold.
He set the phone aside, picked up his doc, and said flatly, "The yellow one fits your vibe better."
"Cool, yellow it is!"
After hanging up, Rebecca looked at the yellow and red dresses on her bed, grabbed the yellow one, folded it, and tossed it in her suitcase, all pumped to see Seb in Aidamore the next day.
After Seb lost his memory, it took Rebecca two years to snag the fiancée title.
But in the next three years, every time Rebecca tried to get closer, Seb would push her away.
Once, Rebecca even went full birthday suit on Seb's bed, but he just crashed in the guest room.
Everyone envied Rebecca for being Seb's fiancée, but only she knew the closest Seb ever got was holding her waist at a party.
She'd thrown fits, but Seb's comeback was always if she couldn't deal, they could call off the engagement. After that, she didn't dare to kick up a fuss again.
Now, they'd been engaged for three years, and lately, Seb's been warming up to her. She figured if she pushed a bit more, they might tie the knot this year.
When Sharon got home, it was already midnight.
Opening the door, she only saw Donna chilling on the couch. Sharon was a bit surprised, "Donna, where's Demetrius?"
"He just knocked out a little while ago."
Sharon nodded, plopped down across from Donna, and said tiredly, "Donna, thanks for tonight."
"No biggie. Demetrius is a breeze. What went down tonight? Why'd you suddenly ask me to take Demetrius home?"
Sharon was quiet for a few seconds and then spilled the beans.
Donna looked a bit freaked after hearing it, "Good thing you had me take Demetrius early. We might've really run into him. But you said Seb mentioned it was your first meet, so he probably won't bug you anymore."
"Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. If he invests in the lab, I'll need you to handle him more."
"I got it. You just keep doing your science stuff in the lab. I'll handle the money folks."
Sharon, feeling all warm and fuzzy, said, "Donna, seriously, thanks a ton."
Donna had been her rock for the past five years. Without her, Sharon wouldn't be where she was now.
Five years back, Sharon had a near-drowning experience but got saved by some good Samaritan.
Back then, Sharon wanted nothing to do with Metropolis or her old life, so she hit up Donna to help her disappear.
It took Sharon three months to get her head straight.
By then, everyone in Metropolis thought she was dead, so she switched her last name to her mom's. And, against all odds, her baby made it too.
Sharon stayed in the crib Donna rented, hitting the books and prepping for her baby.
The next year, Sharon got a shot to reapply for grad school, juggling her studies and taking care of Demetrius.
Those years were tough, but Sharon was cool with it.
If Seb hadn't popped up out of nowhere, her life would've stayed chill.
Donna shot her a mock glare, "If you keep thanking me, I might just stop helping you."
Over the years, Donna had come to see Sharon as a sister.
Donna had seen Sharon's struggles and knew how hard she had hustled.
"Alright, no more thank yous."
Donna looked at her with concern, "You can't keep Demetrius hidden forever. If Seb finds out..."
Sharon's eyes dropped, and after a moment, she said, "I'll keep it under wraps for now. Demetrius is my world. I'm not giving him up to anyone."
"Still, you gotta be ready."
"Yeah, I know."
After Donna left, Sharon sat on the couch, lost in thought.
Seb's look tonight seemed genuinely clueless, not an act.
Thinking about it, Sharon grabbed her laptop and searched for Seb's name.
Since moving to Aidamore, Sharon had cut off all news from Metropolis.
If Seb really didn't remember her, there might be something online about it.
Soon, Sharon found news from five years ago.
Turns out, Seb had a car accident and lost his memory. Seeing that, Sharon's eyes went wide.
Seb really lost his memory?
So when he said it was their first meet, he wasn't bluffing; he actually forgot her?
Sharon gripped the mouse tight, feeling a weird sense of relief.
If Seb had forgotten her, even if he saw Demetrius, who looked like him, he wouldn't think Demetrius was his kid.
This way, she wouldn't have to stress about Seb trying to take Demetrius from her.
Still, she needed to steer clear of Seb and keep him away from Demetrius.
While she was deep in thought, her phone rang.
As soon as she picked up, a gentle voice came through.
"Sharon, I just wrapped up a meeting and saw your presentation video today. It was awesome!"
Sharon grinned confidently, "Of course, who else would it be?"
Zachary chuckled on the other end, walking to the floor-to-ceiling window, suggesting, "Got time tomorrow night? Let's grab dinner."
"Sure, I'm free tomorrow night."
"Don't forget to bring Demetrius. I haven't seen him in a few days, and I miss the little guy," Zachary added.
After locking down the time and place, Sharon hung up, closed her laptop, and went to wash up and crash.
The next evening, Zachary came to pick up Sharon and Demetrius.
Seeing Zachary, Demetrius beamed, "Hey, Mr. Cook."
Zachary scooped him up, his voice cheerful, "Demetrius, did you miss me these past few days?"
