Chapter 586: Used as a Bargaining Chip with Carolyn!
Sharon stopped in her tracks and turned to look at Carolyn. "What's up?"
"I heard Robin came to see you today?"
"Yeah, he did. So what?"
Carolyn pursed her lips and spoke in a low voice, "He's the second-largest shareholder of Carter Tech and heads the R&D department. Try not to piss him off. If he comes to you, steer clear. Don't get into any fights."
Sharon found it amusing. "You should be telling him that. I didn't even know who he was until he came looking for trouble."
"Just don't get into conflicts with Robin."
Seeing Carolyn's stern expression, Sharon lowered her gaze and said seriously, "I can't promise that. I won't go looking for trouble, but if he comes to me, I won't back down."
Carolyn frowned. "Sharon, I didn't send you to the company to make enemies."
"You didn't send me to make enemies; you sent me to be a scapegoat, right?"
Carolyn didn't respond, and the two fell into silence.
The butler suddenly spoke up, "Mrs. Stoll, you have a meeting soon."
Carolyn withdrew her gaze and stood up. "Got it. Have dinner sent to my study."
"Yes, Mrs. Stoll."
After Carolyn left, the butler turned to Sharon. "Ms. Roach, Mrs. Stoll responds better to a softer approach. If you speak to her more gently, you might not always be at odds."
Sharon pursed her lips. "I'm the same way. Why should I be the one to back down first?"
The butler sighed. "Mrs. Stoll has been used to having her way for years. Sometimes, things between you two don't have to be so tense."
The root of the problem was that Sharon and Carolyn were too similar in personality, which made it hard for them to have a calm conversation.
If Sharon could be more carefree and affectionate like Daisy, maybe their relationship would gradually improve and become a normal mother-daughter relationship.
"You should tell her that. I'm not interested in making nice with her."
For the next two weeks, Carolyn left early and returned late every day, and Sharon didn't see her at all.
Two weeks later, Sharon's office was finally renovated, and she moved back from the small meeting room to her own office.
Looking at the bright and cheerful decor, Sharon smiled.
Working in this environment every day improved her mood significantly.
Carolyn's previous black-and-white-gray style always made Sharon feel oppressed and uncomfortable.
"Ms. Roach, if there's anything you're not satisfied with, we can change it anytime."
Sharon shook her head. "No need. It's great as it is."
"Alright, I'll leave you to it. Call me if you need anything."
After Jenny left, Sharon sat down at her desk and casually picked up a document.
After two weeks of hard work, Sharon could now identify simple contract issues, and Jenny had started giving her more complex documents to handle.
In the evening, Sharon returned to the estate as usual.
As soon as she walked into the hall, she noticed the atmosphere was different from usual.
Normally, she could hear the servants chatting while working, but today it was eerily quiet.
The servants were silently doing their tasks, and even those close to each other weren't chatting like before.
Sharon lowered her gaze and quietly headed to her bedroom.
Just as she reached the corner, the butler called out to her.
"Ms. Roach, Mrs. Stoll is in a bad mood today. If she says or does anything, try to endure it to avoid trouble."
"Got it."
Dinner was tense. Carolyn sat at the head of the table, her face grim and stormy.
Even Daisy, who usually talked the most, was quietly eating, not daring to say a word.
Sharon remained indifferent, acting as if she hadn't noticed anything, and ate at her usual pace.
After eating half her meal, she put down her fork.
"I'm done."
As she stood up to leave, Carolyn spoke coldly, "Wait, I need to talk to you later."
Sharon sat back down and started playing a zombie game on her phone.
Daisy glanced at her, annoyed that Sharon seemed unaffected by Carolyn's mood. It confirmed her belief that Carolyn was right to dislike Sharon. Who would like someone who didn't care about their family?
After dinner, Carolyn took Sharon to her study.
"You've been seeing Andrew long enough. I'm planning an engagement party for you two next week."
"I refuse."
Carolyn frowned. "I'm not asking for your opinion. Your refusal doesn't matter. Even if it's not Andrew, it will be someone else. You and Seb are over. You need to accept that."
Sharon smiled. "Whether Seb and I have a future or not, I won't be with another man. If you force me, you'll end up with a corpse. You can decide who to marry off the corpse."
"Sharon, aren't you afraid I'll do something to Seb and Demetrius?"
"Do whatever you want. Even if you promise not to harm them, I won't believe you. You're not trustworthy."
Carolyn slammed the table in anger. "Say that again!"
"Mrs. Stoll, no matter how many times I say it, the result will be the same. Why make me repeat it?"
"You will get engaged! If you don't, I'll bring Seb and Demetrius here to watch you get engaged!"
Sharon's face fell. "You're so cruel. Aren't you afraid of karma?"
Carolyn sneered. "Karma? I only believe there's nothing I can't do. As for karma, I'll deal with it when it comes!"
"Fine, I'll wait and see when karma catches up to you!"
With that, Sharon turned and left.
Back in her bedroom, Sharon opened her chat with Andrew and asked if he knew about Carolyn's plan for their engagement next week.
Andrew replied quickly.
Andrew: [She talked to me about it today. I agreed.]
Sharon was speechless.
Andrew: [After we get engaged, you can move to my place. She won't be able to control you anymore. Plus, it'll be easier for you to see Seb.]
Reading Andrew's message, Sharon's eyes showed a hint of contemplation.
If getting engaged meant she could move out, it might be a good thing.
Sharon: [Are you sure I can move out after the engagement?]
Andrew: [Absolutely. Carolyn promised me.]
Seeing this, Sharon became wary.
Carolyn had made several promises before but never kept them.
Sharon: [Let's discuss this tomorrow. I need to think it over tonight.]
She exited the chat app, put her phone aside, and pondered whether to agree to the engagement.
Moving out of the estate was a huge temptation.
But if Carolyn went back on her word, Sharon would have no recourse.
While she was thinking, there was a sudden, urgent knock at the door.
Sharon got up and opened it. A servant hurriedly said, "Ms. Roach, Mrs. Stoll wants you in the hall."
Seeing the servant's pale face, Sharon had a bad feeling. "What's happened?"
"It's... it's Gareth... You'll understand when you get there..."
Seeing the servant's hesitation, Sharon didn't ask further and quickly headed to the hall.
As soon as she entered, she saw Carolyn and Daisy sitting on the sofa.
Carolyn's face was grim, and Daisy was crying.
Sharon sat across from Carolyn, but before she could speak, Carolyn started.
"Gareth had an accident. I'm going to the South tomorrow. You and Daisy stay in the estate and don't cause any trouble. If you do, I'll deal with you when I return!"
Carolyn turned to the butler. "Is the flight booked?"
The butler looked grim and shook his head. "The earliest flight is at six tomorrow morning."
"Then get the private jet ready. Have the pilot wait on the tarmac!"
"Yes, I'll contact the pilot right away."
Carolyn stood up and quickly walked out.
Sharon was puzzled, still unsure what had happened to Gareth.
Judging by Carolyn's reaction, it wasn't a minor issue.
After Carolyn left, Daisy soon followed.
Sharon waited in the hall until the butler returned. She then asked him what had happened to Gareth.
The butler sighed and said quietly, "I heard Gareth was in a car accident and lost a leg. I don't know the details. We'll have to wait for Mrs. Stoll to return."
Sharon was stunned, finally understanding why Carolyn looked so grim and Daisy was so upset.
Carolyn had been grooming Gareth to be the Stoll family's heir. Losing a leg was a significant blow to her.
But it didn't concern Sharon much.
She had little affection for her half-brother Gareth, and didn't care about his fate.
Seeing Sharon's silence, the butler spoke softly, "Ms. Roach, you should rest early."
"Alright."
The news of Gareth losing a leg quickly spread within the Stoll family and then to other families like the Bermad Family.
Within two hours, almost every notable family in the North knew.
Late at night, Darcy rushed to Jeremy's hospital room.
"Mary, I just got word that Gareth had a car accident in the South and is still in surgery. Carolyn has already gone there. This is our best chance!"
They had waited years for such an opportunity.
Mary, restraining her excitement, asked, "What should I do now?"
"I'll gather the Stoll family members for a meeting to see who supports us."
Mary nodded. "Also, go to the estate and control Daisy and her other daughter. Use them as leverage in negotiations with Carolyn!"
