Chapter 12 Alex's Promise

Before long, the car stopped at the entrance of Fortune Garden, and Sharon finally breathed a sigh of relief. "Seb, thank you for bringing me back."

Just as she was about to get out of the car, a sudden umbrella was handed to her.

Sharon was momentarily stunned and then noticed Seb's slender hand. As someone who liked beautiful hands, she had previously developed a fondness for Alex for this reason, and now Seb's hands exuded an elegant aura.

"Take it." Seb ordered.

Sharon instinctively refused, "No need. I can just run back..."

Before she could finish her sentence, Seb's impatient voice sounded in her ear, "Running back in this rain?"

Sharon was helpless.

After hesitating for a moment, she finally took the umbrella. "Seb, thank you."

Seb still did not respond, his expression indifferent.

She pushed open the car door and got out. Paul had already taken the items out of the trunk and asked, "Ms. Wright, would you like me to walk you up?"

Sharon declined, "No, it's fine. There aren't many things, and I can manage."

Knowing that Seb still had a meeting scheduled, Paul did not insist.

After handing over the items, Paul got back in the car and left.

Watching the black Maybach gradually disappear, Sharon turned and walked towards her apartment.

In the car, Seb picked up a document and said coldly, "Find out what exactly happened between Sharon and Alex."

Back home, Sharon took a shower, cooked some pasta, and prepared to rest.

At that moment, her phone rang.

Receiving a friend request, Sharon's expression soured. The profile picture looked all too familiar—it was Alex's secretary, Ava.

After uncovering Alex's affair with Ava, Sharon had promptly removed her from her friend list. She never imagined Ava would have the audacity to send another friend request.

Sharon felt disdain, but Ava was evidently persistent, sending a second message: [Mrs. Wright, I'm pregnant.]

Sharon's brow furrowed, and her fingers unconsciously tightened around her phone.

After a few seconds, Sharon regained her composure.

She took a screenshot and sent it to Alex, then immediately blocked Ava on Facebook to avoid further annoyance.

Alex's reply came quickly: [Sharon, this was an accident. I'll handle it and make sure Ava never appears in front of you again.]

To Sharon, Alex's promise felt hypocritical. He had made the same promise last time, but what happened?

She didn't reply and directly deleted the chat history with Alex.

In the following days, every time Sharon arrived at the lab, Irene would assign her a bunch of chores, but never mentioned any important details or specific methods about the experiment.

A week quickly passed, and on Friday evening, Susan came to the lab to check on Sharon's progress.

Seeing Sharon cleaning the lab, Susan looked puzzled and turned to Irene, asking, "What's going on? I didn't bring Sharon to the lab to do chores."

Irene, looking innocent and slightly helpless, replied, "Susan, it's not that I don't want to assign her work. She hasn't done any experiments in years, so she has to start with the basics. That's why she's doing these tasks now."

Susan turned to Sharon, asking with concern, "Have you gained anything from your time in the lab these past few days?"

"I observed that the lab is currently working on cardiovascular disease drug development. The progress is about 50%, and they are preparing to enter the mouse testing phase," Sharon replied.

Hearing this, a satisfied smile appeared on Susan's face, and a hint of approval flashed in her eyes. "Very good. How well have you mastered the use of the lab equipment?"

"Pretty much," Sharon said.

Irene frowned slightly and cautioned Sharon, "Sharon, I know you're eager to conduct experiments yourself, but you need to understand that experiments are a meticulous task. Many of the instruments haven't been used recently. How can you say you've mastered them?"

"I used these instruments in college," Sharon replied expressionlessly.

"What you're talking about is from college. You haven't been in a lab for years; many things need to be relearned. We're doing drug development here and can't afford any carelessness," Irene insisted.

"How do you know I haven't relearned from scratch?" Sharon asked softly.

Irene bit her lip, looking at her with disappointment. "You've been doing chores these past few days. When did you have time to learn? Are you lying just to impress Susan?"

Sharon smiled lightly. "So you do realize that I've been assigned a lot of chores these past few days and had no time to learn how to use the lab equipment?"

Irene's face stiffened, and her nails unconsciously dug into her palm. She had underestimated Sharon's abilities!

"Sharon, are you accusing me of deliberately targeting you and not wanting you to learn how to use the equipment?" Irene asked angrily.

"How could that be? I'm very grateful for the work you've assigned me these past few days," Sharon responded, her lips curling slightly.

Irene wanted to argue, but Susan interrupted, "Alright, Sharon, since you say you've pretty much learned and today's experiment involves the extraction step, you can handle it."

Sharon nodded and walked over to the equipment to start the operation. Initially, Irene planned to wait for her to make a mistake so she could use it as an opportunity to make Susan dislike Sharon. But to her surprise, Sharon executed every step with precision and perfection.

It wasn't until Susan praised Sharon that Irene realized a long-forgotten sense of panic rising within her. Before the Wright family went bankrupt, when she worked under Sharon, others always overlooked her. Now, she felt like she was about to return to a life overshadowed by Sharon's brilliance.

Was she destined to live in Sharon's shadow forever? She felt a deep sense of unwillingness!

After praising Sharon, Susan called her into the office and handed her a document. "The company plans to develop a drug for asthma treatment. The other researchers are occupied with other projects, I'm thinking of assigning this one to you. Are you up for it?"

Sharon was a bit surprised, not expecting Susan to give her such an important task so quickly. After reading the materials, she looked up at Susan and said, "Susan, I can't complete this work alone."

Susan said, "I know. Irene's project will be finished in a month or two. I'll have her team assist you then."

Susan mentioned Irene casually, causing Sharon to frown. Knowing Irene's past behavior towards her, Sharon was certain that Irene wouldn't offer genuine help and might even plot against her behind the scenes.
