Chapter 255 I Advise You to Cooperate Obediently
David, standing nearby, let out a string of curses, "Damn right! Look at what he did to Alex! If Alex hadn't been lucky, he might be six feet under right now!"
"We gotta make him come over and say sorry to Alex, or we're calling the cops!"
Tyler shot him a frosty look. "If you call the cops, don't blame me for cutting you off as my son!"
David was so mad he was practically hyperventilating. He pointed at Alex and yelled, "Dad, how can you be so unfair? Seb's your son, but isn't Alex your grandson? And Seb doesn't even see you as his dad anymore, yet you're still jumping to help him! What's wrong with you?"
"Don't forget, when your company was about to go under, it was Seb who bailed you out!"
"I'm his brother; it's what he should do!"
The two were going at it, while Alex, lying in the hospital bed with a cast, just stared out the window, lost in his own world.
Not far outside the window was a university. As the sun set, couples strolled hand in hand on the playground.
The sky was on fire with a crimson glow, casting a warm, dreamy light that stretched their shadows into long, elegant lines.
Alex vaguely remembered the year he finally won over Sharon. He took her for a walk on the playground, wanting to hold her hand but too chicken to do it. He'd brush her hand now and then, all nervous and deliberate.
When he finally got the guts to hold her hand, his heart pounded so hard it felt like it would jump out of his chest.
After that, Alex never saw such a beautiful sunset again. His feelings for Sharon, that young love, just faded away, like the light at the end of the day.
'Maybe, the moment I cheated, I should've let her go. At least, it wouldn't have ended like this.' A sudden scream from the doorway cut through David and Tyler's argument and snapped Alex out of his thoughts.
"No, I don't wanna go to the operating room! Let go of me! You're all murderers!"
The woman's shrill voice echoed into the room, and Alex's gaze turned icy. He knew that voice all too well.
Alex cursed under his breath, 'It's Grace. The woman who caused Sharon's death!'
Hatred flashed in Alex's eyes as he grabbed the crutch by the bedside and hobbled out.
David was startled and quickly went to support him. "Alex, what are you doing? The doc said you need to stay in bed for a month!"
Alex shook him off and said coldly, "Save your act. Keep it for your love child outside."
David's face twisted, his hand hanging in mid-air, unsure whether to pull it back or not.
Alex ignored him and hobbled out of the room on his crutch.
In the hallway outside the ward, a crowd had gathered, all eyes on Grace, who was thrashing around on the floor.
Right now, Grace looked like a madwoman, waving her hands frantically to keep people away, her face filled with terror.
"I don't want surgery! I wanna leave! Let me go!"
Alex looked at Grace coldly, his gaze falling on her broken legs, his eyes narrowing.
The nurse, seeing the growing crowd, quickly explained, "This patient's legs are gone and need to be amputated, but she can't accept it, so she refuses surgery. We're trying to persuade her. Please go back to your rooms; staying here will only make her more agitated."
"You're lying! My legs are perfectly fine!"
Grace's eyes were wild, and her crazed look made some folks wonder if she was off her rocker.
"Then hurry up and get her outta here. She's messing with our peace!"
A bunch of people left. When Grace spotted Alex, a flicker of hope lit up in her eyes, and she started crawling towards him.
"Alex, save me! You were the one who asked me to come back. You gotta save me, or I'll spill everything to Seb!"
Grace's threat was almost laughable to Alex, but he kept quiet, just watching her crawl towards him.
The nurse was about to pull Grace away, but when she saw Grace knew Alex, she hesitated.
After all, Alex was from the Smith family, and they didn't want to mess with him.
Grace finally reached Alex's feet, looking up at him with pleading eyes. Alex finally spoke, "Grace, how do you want me to save you?"
Grace's face lit up with hope, and she quickly said, "Just send me abroad. I won't come back. Help me, and I won't spill anything to Seb."
Alex's lips curled into a slight smile, and just when Grace thought he was gonna agree, he suddenly said, "But he already knows."
Grace's smile froze, her eyes filled with despair and disbelief. "No way. How could he know?"
Alex looked at the nurse and said coldly, "Since she needs amputation surgery, take her away quickly. If she doesn't cooperate, use less anesthesia. People only behave when they're in pain."
"Yes, Mr. Smith."
Two nurses came forward, one on each side, and lifted Grace towards the operating room. Grace struggled desperately, but her legs were dead weight, and she could only curse Alex, "Alex, you'll pay for this! I won't let you off!"
Alex just smiled lightly at her curse and turned back to his room.
It wasn't until she was strapped to the operating table, staring at the blinding surgical light above, that Grace finally began to regret.
She cursed silently in her heart, 'Why did I provoke Sharon? I shouldn't have come back. If I hadn't come back, I wouldn't be in this mess now. It's not my fault; it's Alex and Seb's fault! I hate them. I'll never let them off!'
As the anesthesia took effect, Grace's struggles grew weaker.
When she woke up again, seeing her empty lower body, her expression turned frantic, and she began to scream madly.
But her upper body was strapped to the bed, making it impossible to move.
Tears of regret slid from the corners of her eyes. At that moment, she truly regretted it.
But it was too late.
The door to the room opened, and Victor, dressed in a suit and holding a bouquet of flowers, walked in with a grim face.
Seeing him, Grace's eyes filled with hatred. "Victor, get out! I don't want to see you!"
Behind Victor were several reporters, looking at both Victor and Grace with pity.
They had been told to come and film Victor and Grace's wedding. They had expected it to be grand, but it was held in a ward, and Victor and Grace looked more like enemies than newlyweds.
Victor said nothing, his face dark as he walked to the bedside and awkwardly shoved the bouquet into her arms.
Grace glared at him, her eyes bulging with intense hatred. "Get out! I'd rather die than marry you!"
Thinking about how he had loved Grace for years, Victor felt a wave of nausea.
"It doesn't matter if you don't want to. We got married this morning. If you don't want to die, I suggest you cooperate."
