Chapter 338 The Strange Rose
Sharon's eyes sparkled with sarcasm. "You think being in his thirties is still young?"
If Clara hadn't been constantly bailing Alex out of trouble, he wouldn't have gotten so bold, eventually even resorting to kidnapping.
Clara, desperate, continued, "Ms. Roach, if you could just let Alex go..."
Sharon cut her off. "No way. He's at the police station now. Kidnapping is a serious crime, and you can't drop criminal charges."
Clara pleaded, "If you write a letter of forgiveness, the judge might go easy on him."
Sharon's face turned icy. "If someone tried to kill Alex, would you write a letter of forgiveness?"
Clara froze. After a few seconds, she stammered, "But you and Alex were in love. You were married for years. Why be so ruthless? He just made a mistake."
"Tell that to the police and see if they care," Sharon said, turning to leave.
Clara wanted to chase after her, but David stopped her. "It's no use. She hates Alex too much right now. She won't write a letter of forgiveness."
"But begging Sharon is our only option," Clara said, her voice tinged with desperation.
David's face darkened. "No, there's another way."
"What way?" Clara asked, hopeful.
"Get Dad's inheritance, and then go abroad," David suggested.
Clara's eyes filled with disbelief, and she gritted her teeth. "David, what do you mean? Are you giving up on Alex?"
"Do you think I want to? The police are involved now, what can I do? And don't forget, Seb practically runs Metropolis. Who would dare help someone he's targeting? We're lucky if we can protect ourselves!" David countered.
"As for Alex, let's just pretend he was never born!" David added, frustration clear in his voice.
He thought, 'If Alex had listened to me and not been so stubborn, he wouldn't be in this mess. It's all his own doing.'
As soon as David finished speaking, Clara slapped him hard, trembling with anger. "David, I misjudged you! How can you be so heartless? If you're not going to help Alex, then we're done. We have nothing to do with each other anymore!"
"Fine, we're done! I've had enough too!" David shouted, turning and leaving.
Clara watched his back, her eyes filled with hatred.
When Sharon got home, Demetrius ran into her arms as soon as she walked in. "Mom, where did you go? I missed you!"
Sharon's heart softened as she saw the unease in Demetrius's eyes. Ever since the kidnapping, he had been having nightmares, and he had only just started to get better in the past few days. Now that she had suddenly gone out, he probably felt insecure again.
Sharon squatted down and brought out the egg tart she had hidden behind her back, smiling. "Didn't you say you wanted an egg tart? I went to get one for you."
"Mom, you're the best!" Demetrius said happily, taking the egg tart and walking towards the dining table with a smile.
Watching his cheerful steps, Sharon couldn't help but smile. Just as she was about to go to her room, her phone rang from her bag.
Seeing it was an unknown number, she hung up immediately.
The caller didn't try again, and Sharon didn't think much of it, assuming it was a wrong number or a spam call.
After changing into her home clothes, Sharon went into the kitchen and opened the fridge, finding that they were running low on groceries. She decided to go shopping after lunch.
She pulled out the remaining veggies and started washing and prepping them.
Just as she finished, the doorbell rang.
Sharon walked to the door and peeked through the peephole but saw nothing. She frowned and went back to the living room to check the surveillance footage.
Soon, she saw someone in a baseball cap and mask leaving a bouquet of roses at her door before walking away.
Sharon frowned and called Zachary to see if he had sent the flowers.
Zachary's voice was amused. "I've been swamped with a merger case these past few days. It looks like I have a rival."
Sharon couldn't help but laugh. "What rival? It's probably just a prank."
"I'm already feeling the pressure," Zachary teased.
"Then come over for dinner tonight. Demetrius and I miss you," Sharon said.
"Next time, say that last part in two separate sentences," Zachary replied with a chuckle.
Sharon was taken aback, then raised an eyebrow. "Okay, I miss you, and Demetrius misses you too."
There was a brief silence on the other end, and then Zachary's deep voice came through. "Alright, I'll be there promptly at 6:30 PM"
After hanging up, Sharon's smile gradually faded. If it wasn't Zachary, then who sent the flowers? Or was it a mistake?
After hesitating for a moment, she opened the door.
Seeing a card on the bouquet, Sharon picked it up and opened it.
The card read, [Sharon, welcome back.]
Sharon clenched the card tightly, took a deep breath, and threw the bouquet and the card into the trash downstairs.
After lunch, Sharon took Demetrius out to buy groceries.
She couldn't shake the feeling of being watched ever since they left the building, but every time she looked back, she saw no one.
In the supermarket, she felt like someone was watching her, sending a chill down her spine.
She hurriedly bought the groceries and took Demetrius home.
It wasn't until she sat on the couch in the living room that Sharon felt the sense of being watched disappear.
She had always trusted her instincts, so she took out her phone and called Seb.
Seb had previously said he would have people protect her and Demetrius, so maybe the feeling of being watched was because of them.
The call connected quickly, and Seb's cool voice came through. "What's wrong?"
Ever since he saved her, Sharon's hostility towards him had lessened, replaced by a feeling she couldn't quite put into words.
She took a deep breath to calm her nerves. "Mr. Smith, you said you would have people protect me and Demetrius. Today, when I went out, I felt like someone was watching me. Was it your people?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end. After a few seconds, Seb spoke in a serious tone, "My people have been following you for a few days. If you felt watched, you would have noticed earlier. Apart from feeling watched, has anything else strange happened?"
"Someone sent a bouquet of roses today with a card that said 'Sharon, welcome back.' I don't know who it's from," Sharon explained.
Seb's face turned cold. "Alright, I understand. I'll assign more people to protect you and Demetrius. If possible, you two should move back for now."
Sharon bit her lip, hesitating.
On one hand, she didn't want to go back. On the other hand, the trauma from being kidnapped by Alex hadn't faded; staying here made her feel scared.
Sensing her hesitation, Seb said calmly, "If you don't want to see me, I'll call ahead before coming home, and I won't eat with you."
