Chapter 363 If Only She Could Fall for Him
Since she just couldn't bring herself to like him, leaving now seemed like the right move.
Sharon and Zachary sat in silence, and guilt hit Sharon like a wave. She had hurt the one person who treated her the best.
"Sharon, don't beat yourself up. Even if we're not together, we're still good friends. Those five years meant something," Zachary said, trying to comfort her.
Being with her and Demetrius for five years was already a blessing for him.
Sharon looked down, her eyes getting misty. "Zachary, please stop."
The nicer he was, the worse she felt. If only she could love him back.
Zachary was taken aback for a second, then stood up with a smile. "Come on, I'll take you home."
The ride back was quiet. Zachary drove slowly, but no matter how slow, the trip had to end.
When they pulled up to Sharon's place, Zachary turned to her and said softly, "Can I hug you one last time?"
"Okay," Sharon agreed.
She unbuckled her seatbelt and hugged Zachary. Sadness and reluctance flashed in his eyes. This hug was a goodbye to the last five years.
"Sharon, I won't be around anymore. Remember to eat on time. Don't let work mess with your health. And I can tell Mr. Smith loves you. If you still have feelings for him, try to work it out. You've already missed five years," Zachary said, his voice full of emotion.
For him, Sharon's happiness was everything.
Sharon's eyes filled with tears. "Zachary, you'll find someone who loves you."
"Alright, may you find happiness as well," Zachary responded.
Then, he let go of her and turned away. "You should go up. I won't see you off today."
Sharon got out of the car and stood by the side, watching him. "I'll watch you leave."
Zachary nodded. "Okay, goodbye."
He looked away and started the car. As he watched Sharon's figure get smaller in the rearview mirror, his expression turned bitter.
Ever since he knew Sharon moved to Seb's place for Demetrius, he had a feeling it would be tough for them to be together. But accepting it was still hard.
Maybe it was for the best. Instead of having her stay reluctantly, it was better to let go now and cherish the good memories of the past five years.
Suddenly, his phone rang. Seeing it was his mom, Zoe Cook, he didn't ignore it this time. He answered.
"Zachary, you finally picked up. I've been thinking a lot. If you really like Sharon, I won't stand in your way anymore. The only catch is you have to stay in Aidamore and not move to another city," Zoe said.
Zachary let out a bitter laugh, his voice low. "Mom, it's too late. We already broke up. I'll wrap things up in Metropolis and head back to Aidamore in a few days. I'll even go on those blind dates you set up."
Since he wasn't marrying Sharon, it didn't matter who he ended up with. Even if it was just a business arrangement, he'd go along with it.
There was a pause on the other end before Zoe's shocked voice came through. "What did you say? You broke up? Really?"
Before, when she opposed Zachary and Sharon, Zachary had left for Metropolis without a word. Even when she used the Cook Group to pressure him to come back to Aidamore, he still refused. But now, not long after, Zachary and Sharon had split.
Zachary didn't want to drag it out. After a brief response, he hung up.
Zoe didn't call back. Instead, she quickly contacted a friend to start setting up blind dates for Zachary. She was never happy with Sharon anyway. Sharon had been married and had a kid. If Zachary married her, people in their social circle would mock him.
Now that Zachary and Sharon were done, it was perfect. She could find someone more suitable for him.
Sharon watched Zachary's car drive away before heading upstairs. Just as she reached her door, her phone rang. It was Seb.
"Sharon, it's almost eleven-thirty. Aren't you coming to pick up Demetrius?" Seb asked, sounding impatient.
Sharon suddenly remembered she had promised to pick up Demetrius. "I'm on my way."
She grabbed a cab and headed to the villa. When she walked into the living room, she saw Seb.
"Where's Demetrius?" Sharon asked.
Seb looked up, his expression cold. "He's already asleep. I'll wake him up."
"No need. Let him sleep. I'll carry him to the car," Sharon replied.
"I'll drive you back," Seb offered.
Sharon didn't have a car, and taking a cab wasn't convenient, so she didn't refuse. "Thanks."
On the way back, Sharon stared out the window, lost in thought. Seb glanced at her a few times and finally asked, "What's wrong? Did I interrupt your date?"
Sharon turned to look at him, then lowered her gaze. "I broke up with him."
Seb suddenly slammed on the brakes, and the tires screeched against the road. Sharon was startled and quickly turned to check on Demetrius in the back seat. Seeing that he was still asleep, she let out a sigh of relief.
"What are you doing? What if Demetrius fell off the seat?" Sharon snapped.
Seb frowned at her. "Why did you two break up?"
Zachary had been by Sharon's side for five years, and Seb knew Zachary genuinely liked her. How could they just break up like that?
Sharon pressed her lips together. "That's my private matter. It doesn't concern you."
"How could it not concern me? I'm Demetrius's father. I want to give him a complete family, and I want to be with you again. Don't you get it?" Seb said, his voice full of emotion.
Seb knew tonight wasn't the best time to bring this up, but since the topic had come up, he decided to lay it all out there.
When Sharon met his serious gaze, her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away. "Mr. Smith, I just want to focus on my work and take care of Demetrius right now. I don't want to think about anything else."
Seb withdrew his gaze and said calmly, "I'm not forcing you. Take your time to think about it."
He restarted the car. Looking at his determined profile, Sharon clenched her hands on her lap and said nothing more.
They stayed silent all the way to her place. Seb carried Demetrius and walked Sharon upstairs. Before leaving, he looked at her and said, "Think about what I said. Demetrius is still young. As he grows, he'll need a father still. There are some things a mother just can't do."
Sharon looked him straight in the eye. "Are you doing this for Demetrius, or for yourself?"
Seb was silent for a moment before saying slowly, "Sharon, I know I said a lot of hurtful things when I had amnesia. I know you won't forgive me easily, but I hope you can give me another chance. I want to make up for the pain I caused you and the five years I missed with you and Demetrius."
His eyes were filled with sincerity, and every word made Sharon's heart race, leaving her unsettled.
"It's late now. You should go back. I'll think about what you said," Sharon said softly.
"Okay," Seb replied.
After Seb left, Sharon's mind replayed his words, and her thoughts were a tangled mess. She had just broken up with Zachary. Even if she were to reconsider her relationship with Seb, it would take time, so she decided not to think about it for now.
In the following days, Sharon was extremely busy with her project. When Sophie called her, she was still working overtime, waiting for some experimental data.
"Sharon, what's going on with you and Zachary? Why is he starting to go on blind dates? If he did something to hurt you, I'll fly to Aidamore and deal with him myself!" Sophie exclaimed, her voice filled with concern.
Sharon paused, holding her pen. "Zachary and I broke up."
"What? How could it be so sudden? Last time I saw you two, you seemed fine. Did he not withstand the pressure from his family?" Sophie asked, shocked.
"No, I was the one who initiated the breakup," Sharon said.
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Sophie spoke softly, "You initiated it? Is it because you're sure your feelings for him aren't love?"
"Yes. In short, it's my fault," Sharon said, her voice tinged with guilt.
Sophie sighed. "If you really don't like him, there's nothing you can do."
If it were before, Sophie might have scolded Sharon. However, recently, meeting Dwayne every day made her realize how painful it was to be with someone she had no feelings for. It felt like completing a task, making her miserable.
"I just feel sorry for Zachary and don't know how to make it up to him," Sharon said, her voice filled with regret.
Hearing this, Sophie immediately frowned. "Stop that thought right now! First of all, Zachary doesn't need anything. Secondly, he was good to you because he liked you. If he knew you were thinking about how to make it up to him, it would break his heart. He's liked you for five years. If he wanted something else, he could have found someone more suitable. Why would he stay by your side? Since you can't return his feelings, don't disturb him. Just live your life well. Besides, making it up won't erase the past five years as if nothing happened."
"I'm not trying to erase it. I just feel I owe him too much," Sharon said, her voice trembling.
"If he ever needs help in the future and you can assist, then do so. But for now, stop thinking about it," Sophie advised.
Sharon said softly, "Okay, I understand."
It wasn't until after ten o'clock at night that the experiment ended. Sharon packed up the experimental equipment and left, running into Seb in the elevator.
Seb's eyes showed a hint of surprise. "Why are you leaving work so late?"
"I am waiting for some experimental data," Sharon replied.
Seb nodded and said nothing more. The elevator became quiet.
Soon, the elevator reached the basement level, and Sharon walked out first. Behind her, she heard Seb's footsteps, which didn't sound as steady as usual but rather weak.
Sharon instinctively turned back and saw Seb clutching his stomach, his face pale.
"What's wrong with you?" Sharon asked, quickly walking towards him, her tone carrying a concern she didn't even notice.
Seb shook his head. "It's nothing, just a bit of stomach pain. It'll pass soon."
