Chapter 18 How Did It Get Discovered?
Alex apologized sincerely, "Sharon, I'm really sorry about today. I was too impulsive at the time."
Seeing the guilty expression on his face, Sharon remained unresponsive. "I don't want to see you right now."
Alex continued, "Sharon, I promise I will never resort to force again. Can you give me another chance? I will make it up to you."
He looked sincere, but Sharon just wanted to laugh. She thought, 'Cheating is cheating, whether it's once or multiple times, and I'll never forgive him. but if I say something to provoke him, he definitely won't leave easily tonight.'
Sharon said, "I understand, but I need time to process this. You should go back."
Alex sensed her indifference and frowned slightly. "Sharon, I said I would give you time, but can you not be so resistant to me?"
Annoyed by his persistence, Sharon finally looked up. "You say you'll give me time, but have you really? The day after I found out you cheated, you tried to force me to accept it. And today, too. Until now, I still can't see any real remorse in you. You just want to cover up the facts and move on quickly, but I can't forget, especially not now."
Seeing the tears welling up in her eyes, Alex felt a pang of guilt. He reached out to hold her, but she stepped back, leaving his hand hanging in the air.
Sharon continued, "Alex, in all these years of marriage, I've never wronged you. Our relationship spans eight years, not eight months or eight days. You betrayed me and expect me to accept it immediately. Is that possible? Unless I have no feelings for you, no normal person can resolve such a heartache. I can't forgive you for cheating so quickly. Please, stop forcing me."
She initially just wanted Alex to leave, but as she spoke, tears began to flow again.
Since learning about Alex's infidelity, Sharon had forced herself not to think about anything related to him, keeping herself extremely busy every day, only falling asleep as soon as she hit the bed, and hoping time would dull the pain of betrayal.
But Alex kept pushing, giving her no chance to ease her pain.
Seeing the tears in her eyes, Alex felt a surge of guilt. "Sharon, I'm sorry." Since she mentioned divorce, he had apologized countless times, but this time, it was the most sincere.
Sharon wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, gradually calming down. "You can go now. I don't want to see you."
Alex sighed. Though he wanted to stay, he knew Sharon's character well enough to know she wouldn't agree. He nodded reluctantly. "Take care living on your own. If anything comes up, don't hesitate to give me a call."
Sharon looked at him coldly, not responding.
As he turned to leave, Alex caught a glimpse of a black suit jacket hanging by the sofa, and his steps faltered.
He remembered that Seb had been wearing that jacket when he came to see him today. Seb usually didn't interfere in others' affairs, but today he not only took Sharon away but also gave her his jacket.
Moreover, when they had dinner at the Smith Manor last time, he noticed Seb's gaze often lingering on Sharon. But Seb was his uncle and had no interest in women, so maybe he was overthinking it.
Alex didn't want to dwell on it and left in a hurry.
Considering Ava's safety, his subordinate finally dialed Clara's number.
After a moment of hesitation, Clara decisively said, "Bring Ava back!"
For the rest of the weekend, Alex didn't contact Sharon, and her life remained as calm as ever.
On Monday morning, as soon as Sharon walked into the R&D department, Susan stormed in, making no effort to hide her anger as she coldly addressed Irene, "Irene, come to my office!"
Everyone in the R&D department immediately focused their attention on Irene. Because Susan had never spoken to Irene so harshly before.
Irene was taken aback, more shocked than embarrassed. "Susan, what's going on?"
Susan didn't answer and turned directly towards her office.
Feeling the curious gazes of her colleagues, Irene's face turned red with shame. She felt extremely humiliated, especially when her eyes met Sharon's, thinking Sharon must be secretly laughing at her predicament.
Irene suppressed her anger, bit her lower lip and followed Susan into the office.
As soon as the door closed, Susan threw a document heavily in front of her. "Take a look at this!"
Susan's voice was full of disappointment, and her eyes showed discontent.
Irene confusedly picked up the document and flipped through a few pages. Her face instantly darkened, and her hands holding the document began to tremble slightly. How could this happen?
Seeing her guilty expression, Susan said coldly, "I used to think you were diligent, but you actually tampered with the experimental data. Do you know how many lives would be at risk if the drug you developed went to market?"
"Susan, I really know I was wrong. I just wanted our data to look better," Irene explained.
Susan sneered, "Are you sure you just wanted the data to look better? The first batch of lab mice already showed various complications, yet you didn't mention any of it in the experimental records. Clearly, there were issues with the data, but you falsely claimed everything was normal. If your drug went to market, wouldn't it be tantamount to playing with people's lives?"
Facing Susan's icy gaze, Irene panicked. She thought, 'I have been so discreet; how could I have been discovered?'
Suddenly, Irene thought of Sharon.
The report on the experiment's progress coincided with the time Sharon joined the company. Clearly, Sharon had betrayed her!
Irene couldn't believe that Sharon had only been there for a week and had already noticed her tampering with the data.
She was filled with rage and hatred, wanting to rush back to the R&D department and slap Sharon.
Irene said, "Susan, I'm sorry. We've been developing this drug for over a year with no progress. I was too impatient and made a mistake. Can you forgive me this once? I promise it won't happen again!"
Seeing Irene's earnest expression, Susan fell silent, her gaze cold and unforgiving.
Irene didn't dare to meet Susan's eyes, lowering her head to appear more pitiful.
After a few minutes of silence, Susan finally spoke coldly. "I've reported this to headquarters. I'll try to explain on your behalf, but I can't predict how they will handle it."
