Chapter 14 A Piece of Cake
Sharon's face instantly turned cold. The Robinson family had quickly severed ties with the Wright family after Robert Pharmaceuticals went bankrupt. They hadn't visited Robert in years, and now their sudden appearance was undoubtedly with ill intentions.
After comforting Karen, Sharon saw her calm down and then headed to the stairwell. She dialed Irene's number directly. "Irene, what did you and your father say to my father at the hospital today?"
A light chuckle came from Irene before she answered casually, "Sharon, my dad and I just swung by to see Mr. Wright and also talked about some past matters. What's the matter?"
Her casual tone made Sharon's anger surge. "What did my dad ever do to your Robinson clan? Have you and your dad got no conscience at all?"
If it weren't for Robert, Ted, Irene's father would never have become the purchasing manager at Robert Pharmaceuticals, setting him up for all he had got going on then. The Robinson family not only lacked gratitude but repeatedly repaid kindness with malice, showing endless malevolence.
"Sharon, I originally didn't want to bother Mr. Wright, but you insisted on coming to Medica Care International Pharmaceuticals and made me unhappy. I can only make you suffer," Irene responded coldly.
"I see." Sharon lowered her gaze, her grip on the phone tightening.
She hadn't intended to deal with Irene, but since Irene dared to go after her father, she would no longer tolerate it.
Sharon said coldly, "Your actions today will come at a price."
Irene sneered dismissively, "Oh really? I'll be waiting."
Irene had heard that Alex had an ambiguous relationship with his secretary Ava. It wouldn't be long before Sharon would be kicked out of the Smith family. With Sharon no longer under the Smith family's protection, taking her down would be a piece of cake for Irene.
Without saying more, Irene hung up the phone and anonymously sent the previously organized documents to Susan's email.
When Sharon returned to the emergency room entrance, the surgery light had just turned off, and she quickly walked to the outside of the operating room to wait. Karen's body was trembling, and Sharon immediately stepped forward to support her.
Shortly after, the emergency room door opened, and the doctor came out.
"Doctor, how is my husband?" Karen asked anxiously.
"He is temporarily out of danger, but he must avoid any stress in the future, or his body might not hold out until a kidney donor is found," the doctor replied.
Karen breathed a sigh of relief, wiped away her tears, and nodded repeatedly. "Okay, I understand."
"Tonight, we need to monitor his heart rate with instruments. You need to take turns keeping watch, and notify us immediately if there are any issues," the doctor said before leaving.
Soon after, a nurse wheeled Robert out of the emergency room. He was still under anesthesia and remained asleep, his eyes closed. Worn by illness, his face looked particularly gaunt, with high cheekbones and no trace of color.
Seeing this, Sharon's tears welled up and streamed down her face.
Since Robert Pharmaceuticals went bankrupt, Robert's health has been deteriorating, spending most of his time in the hospital and growing weaker by the day.
After returning to the ward, Alex asked Karen to rest, saying he and Sharon would stay and watch over Robert tonight.
In the middle of the night, Robert finally woke up.
Sharon asked, "Dad, you're awake? How are you feeling?"
Robert said, "I'm fine. Where's Karen?"
Karen and Robert were both in their second marriage, each bringing a child into the relationship. When they decided to get married, Sharon was already eighteen, so she didn't object. After the marriage, Karen treated Sharon well, and the family lived harmoniously.
After Robert Pharmaceuticals went bankrupt and Robert fell ill and was hospitalized, Karen stayed by his side without leaving. Only then did Sharon understand the true love between them.
"She'll come back to take care of you tomorrow. Let her rest for now," Sharon said.
Robert nodded. "I'm fine too. It's late; you and Alex can go home and rest."
Now that the Wright family had declined, Sharon marrying into the Smith family was considered a step up. He didn't want Sharon to feel burdened by it. Perhaps at first, Alex wouldn't mind taking care of him in the hospital, but over time, Alex might have concerns.
Sharon sensed Robert's intentions, feeling a pang of sorrow in her heart.
She replied, "Dad, it's okay. I'll stay with you tonight."
Alex added, "It's fine, Dad. It's our duty to be here with you."
Robert sighed, "You don't need to take care of me. Karen's care is enough. You both are busy; you don't need to visit me all the time. Just live your lives well."
Alex quickly squatted down and said, "Dad, please don't worry. I will take good care of Sharon."
Robert said, "As long as you treat her well, I'll be content."
Seeing Robert's eyes slowly closing, Sharon hurriedly called out, "Dad, the anesthesia hasn't worn off completely. You can't sleep yet."
All night, Sharon and Alex took turns waking Robert until dawn, when the anesthesia's effects gradually wore off, allowing Robert to finally sleep.
At dawn, Karen came in with a bowl of freshly made soup.
Karen said, "Sharon, Alex, thank you for your help last night. You can go home now; I'll handle things here."
Having stayed up all night, Sharon's eyes were barely open. As she stood up, she wobbled, and Alex immediately supported her shoulder. "Sharon, be careful."
Sharon wiped away her tears and gently pushed him away. "Okay."
Her cold expression made Alex feel a pang of disappointment, realizing she still couldn't forgive him.
Sharon nodded to Karen. "Okay, Karen. If anything comes up, just call me. I'll be resting at home over the weekend."
Karen felt something was off and frowned slightly. She thought, 'Hasn't Sharon been out of work? Why would she mention resting over the weekend?'
However, before Karen could ask, a nurse came in to check on Robert, so she had to suppress her doubts and decided to ask Sharon privately later.
As Alex and Sharon walked out of the hospital, Sharon prepared to hail a cab, but Alex stepped in front of her. "Sharon, I'll take you home," he offered.
After some consideration, Sharon decided to talk to him about some things and nodded. "Okay."
