Chapter 229 Clearly, We Were Just One Step Away
A wave of heat hit him right in the gut, and everything in the hall started to get all fuzzy.
Seb's eyes flashed cold. He set down his wine glass and made a beeline out of the hall.
He'd been in the business game for years and was no stranger to dirty tricks.
But Seb never thought someone would have the guts to slip him an aphrodisiac!
His steps were already wobbly. Just as he got out of the hall, he heard the click-clack of high heels behind him.
"Seb."
A slender hand grabbed his wrist. The faint scent of roses from Grace made his head spin even more.
Grace was about to latch onto him, but he suddenly shoved her away. She stumbled back a few steps before catching her balance.
"Seb."
Grace looked at him, eyes wide with disbelief.
She didn't think that even drugged, Seb would still have the strength to push her away.
Seb glared at her, a storm brewing in his eyes. "Was it you who drugged me?"
Grace's face froze, guilt flashing in her eyes. "Seb, what are you talking about? What drug?"
"Grace, I'm not letting this slide."
Seb's face was stone-cold, his eyes practically freezing her in place. Grace felt a chill run down her spine and took a step back.
But seeing Seb's shaky stance, Grace gritted her teeth and tried to hug him again.
As long as she could get him in bed, she didn't believe he wouldn't take responsibility!
The next second, Seb shoved her away in disgust.
Grace hit the ground hard, a sharp pain shooting up from her ankle.
"Oh, it hurts."
As she fell, she heard a nasty crack from her left foot. She must've broken it.
She didn't expect Seb to be so ruthless. Even drugged, he could still push her away.
"Grace, is this all you got? Don't make me lose even more respect for you!"
Grace looked up with tear-filled eyes, but all she saw was Seb's cold back.
She couldn't hold it in anymore and shouted all her grievances at his retreating figure.
"Seb, I met you first. Why did you fall for Sharon? We were so close to being together forever. How can I accept this? Don't you think you're being too cruel to me?"
Seb stopped and turned to look at her, his eyes ice-cold.
"You insisted on going abroad back then. Shouldn't you have seen this coming? Even without Sharon, I could never love you again."
Leaving those cold words behind, Seb ignored her and walked away quickly.
He could feel his consciousness slipping.
If he stayed any longer, who would know what might happen.
Sharon had just touched up her makeup in the restroom. When she got back to the hall, she saw Zachary chatting with some guys in suits, looking pretty chummy. Sharon didn't go over; instead, she grabbed a glass of champagne and found a corner to sit down.
After about half an hour, Sharon was feeling a bit tipsy. Just as she was about to leave, a servant came up to her.
"Ms. Wright, Miss Lee invites you to the garden. She says she has a surprise for you."
Sharon looked at Sophie, who was laughing and chatting with some girls in the middle of the hall, a look of confusion crossing her face. "Are you sure?"
Judging by Sophie's vibe, she didn't seem like she had time to go to the garden.
But the servant was definitely from the Lee family. Sharon had seen her a few times before when she visited.
"Yes, Miss Lee said you'll know once you get there."
Sharon nodded. "Okay, got it."
After the servant left, Sharon thought for a moment and decided to text Sophie, asking what she wanted her to do in the garden.
Sophie turned and shot her a smile, typing back that she'd know once she got there.
Seeing it was really Sophie who sent the servant, Sharon got up and headed towards the garden.
This place was huge, and getting to the garden meant walking through a winding path.
Everyone was in the hall, so the path was pretty quiet.
Seasonal flowers and neatly trimmed shrubs lined both sides, their scent carried by the night breeze, refreshing and pleasant.
Just as she was about to reach the garden, Sharon suddenly heard a low groan from the side.
She stopped in her tracks and looked towards the bushes, a sense of unease creeping in.
Without much thought, Sharon turned and quickly walked back the way she came.
But she had only taken two steps when a hot hand grabbed her waist.
Sharon yelped in surprise, but the next second, a pair of fiery lips pressed against hers.
The familiar scent made Sharon's eyes widen in shock.
The person kissing her forcefully was none other than Seb!
Before she could react, Seb's hand slowly slid from her waist to her back.
Sharon shuddered. She tried to push Seb away, but he held her too tightly, overpowering her.
Sharon bit down hard on Seb's lip. As he winced and let her go, she snapped, "Seb, are you nuts? This is Sophie's party!"
Seb's expression cleared for a moment, then got blurry again. He kissed Sharon's lips once more.
At this moment, Seb had lost all reason. His body was burning up, and the only thought in his mind was to take the woman in front of him.
Sharon struggled, but it was useless. Seb's kiss was hot and domineering, like it wanted to burn away her reason too.
"Let go."
Sharon had also drunk quite a bit tonight, and her mind was a bit foggy. But she still tried her best to push Seb away, to no avail.
She vaguely realized that Seb's weird behavior was probably because he was drugged.
"Seb, let go of me. I'll get some help."
Barely managing to push Seb away, Sharon had just finished speaking when Seb kissed her again.
Seb held her, and they both rolled into the nearby flower bushes.
Sharon's phone, which had fallen to the side, lit up with a message from Sophie.
An hour later, Sophie couldn't find Sharon in the garden and called her.
The phone rang for a long time before it was answered. Sharon's hoarse voice came through, "Sophie."
"Sharon, where are you? The fireworks are about to start. I set them up just for you tonight. They were supposed to go off an hour ago, but there was a problem with the last batch, so I had to get new ones. They're ready now."
Sharon loved fireworks the most. Sophie had spent a lot of money on them this time, including the latest works from Sharon's favorite fireworks artist.
Sharon opened Facebook and saw that Sophie had indeed sent her a message an hour ago.
Sharon smiled bitterly. If she had gotten Sophie's message a minute earlier, she might not have ended up hooking up with Seb.
"I had to take care of something, so I left. I probably won't make it back in time for the fireworks show. Thanks anyway, Sophie."
Sophie sighed in disappointment. "Can't you come back now? The fireworks won't last long."
"Probably not. I'm almost in the city."
Sophie's villa was in the suburbs, about a half-hour drive from the city.
"Alright then, it's okay. Next time you come over, I'll set them up again, just for the two of us."
"Okay, I gotta go now. Happy birthday, Sophie!"
After hanging up, Sharon's phone slipped from her hand, and tears fell.
Fireworks exploded in the sky above the villa, mesmerizing and stunning, impossible to look away from.
Sharon glanced back, then lowered her head and told the driver to start the car and leave.
