Chapter 10
Selena plopped down in the lounge by the window and quickly typed out a message: [Can I meet him in person first?]
She was right downstairs at the Montague Group building, so if Raymond was up for it, they could meet right away.
The lawyer said he'd check and then went radio silent.
Up on the top floor, Raymond was behind his sleek black marble desk, eyes on the documents in front of him.
John walked in without knocking. "Mr. Montague, Ms. Fair wants to meet you in person."
Raymond barely glanced up, his voice flat. "No."
Just another ploy to dodge the divorce.
Did she really think a face-to-face would change anything? She was way too confident.
Raymond's face tightened with annoyance, his voice icy. "Send the divorce papers to Fair Manor and make sure she signs them."
John nodded, skipping any further talk about Selena, and moved on to the schedule. "Ethan Anderson, the president of Citibank, has a meeting with you at the golf course this afternoon. We should head out now."
Raymond stood, casually adjusting his tie. "Alright."
Time dragged on, and as Selena sat there, more people showed up, all dressed to the nines.
She sat quietly, like a beautiful painting, until her phone buzzed with a call from James.
"Selena, what's going on? Why does Raymond suddenly want a divorce?" James sounded unusually frantic. "Is there something wrong between you two? Come back, and we'll talk it over."
Selena hesitated before answering, "Dad, you know he went abroad for three years because of our marriage. Now that he's back, what else could it be for?"
James was worried. "Selena, you can't get divorced now. The Fair Group is struggling and about to face a second round of financing. If news of your divorce gets out, our stock will tank, and shareholders will bail."
In the background, Beatrice's mocking voice chimed in. "I've always said she and you are not on the same page and can't be relied upon. If she had put in a bit more effort, would Raymond have sent the divorce papers directly to our home? Now we've all become a joke!"
James was quiet for a moment, then spoke softly, "I'm doing this for your own good. After the divorce, it will be hard for you to remarry. We should go find William; he has always cared for you."
Selena felt a surge of frustration and wanted to snap back—was this really for her, or for the Fair Group, or for Beatrice?
But she held her tongue.
She remembered when Barbara had just passed away, James would even take her to meetings, afraid something might happen to her.
She just told him that William was at a foreign sanatorium and hadn't come back yet, gave him some comforting words, and hung up.
Raymond had already sent the divorce papers to Fair Manor, making it clear that talking to him was a dead end.
He didn't even want to see her; he despised her as his wife more than she ever thought.
Since Raymond had made his position clear, there was no point in sticking around and making things harder for herself.
Feeling a bit down, Selena got into her car, accidentally bumped her knee, winced in pain, and then saw a new message from Matthew: [Did Ethan's son, Joseph Anderson, contact you before?]
Selena did remember Joseph, but she had been busy with another client's project and had forgotten about it.
Matthew said Joseph had scheduled an appointment with the studio and was now at the golf course, specifically asking for her.
The golf course was out in the suburbs and was said to be the best in Silver Bay City, sprawling over hundreds of acres.
As soon as Selena parked, someone came out to greet her, introducing themselves as Joseph's assistant.
"Ms. Cooper, hello," the assistant smiled, keeping it polite. "This way, please."
Penny Cooper was Selena's designer alias.
Following the assistant, she realized they were heading to the locker room.
The assistant explained, "The grass and sand on the course need maintenance, and only players and caddies are allowed in. I've prepared a golf club for you. Do you play golf, Ms. Cooper?"
Selena replied, "I know a bit, but I'm not very good."
The assistant reassured her, "That's fine. Please change your clothes first; Mr. Anderson is waiting for you on the course."
Selena nodded. She had played tennis and gone fishing with clients to secure orders before, so this golf request was no big deal.
The assistant had prepared a white sports skirt for Selena, thoughtfully paired with a matching headband.
Selena tied her long hair into a ponytail, grabbed a golf club cover, and headed out.
As soon as she reached the lobby downstairs, she glanced at the golf course outside the window. When she looked back, she saw Raymond from a distance, tall and imposing, exuding a chilling aura as he walked in, surrounded by a group of people.
Selena paused, standing still.
Raymond had also come here.
Selena stood in the most conspicuous spot, making it hard not to be noticed.
Her bright eyes and high ponytail gave off a youthful and lively vibe.
Her long, straight legs under the sports skirt were marred by a red mark on her knee, making it particularly noticeable.
Raymond glanced at her once and then looked away.
