Chapter 1567 That Woman Still Won't Give Up?

Ann texted Shelley again: [If you wanna go shopping, I can tag along.]

Shelley replied: [No need, I'm really fine. Selena just called me too, but she's quite busy. Anyway, I've got to run—something's come up.]

Ann: [Alright, take care.]

Ann set her phone down and surveyed her office. She'd been working overtime for two straight days without going home, merely freshening up in the office rest area and changing clothes before diving back into work. Now that she finally had a moment to breathe, her eyes burned with fatigue.

A knock at the door announced Ronald's arrival, a folder in hand. He stopped short when he saw Ann still at her desk.

"You haven't been home in two days?" he asked, brows furrowing in concern.

"I wanted to clear the backlog from the past month," she replied simply.

Ronald frowned. "Ann, Ms. Fair didn't expect you to work yourself to death while she's away. By the time she returns, you'll be completely burned out."

Ann rose from her chair with a forced lightness in her voice. "Fine, I'm heading home to rest now. The processed documents are on the left—have a look when you get a chance."

Ronald nodded, surprised by her easy acquiescence.

But Ann had no intention of going home. Instead, she grabbed her purse and headed straight for the bar to find Alex. It wasn't about Paul this time—she wanted to know what was really happening with the Harper family.

Alex had mentioned earlier that the Harpers were in some kind of trouble, suggesting he'd caught wind of it before the news broke.

When she reached the bar, she called him. Alex clearly hadn't saved her number, answering with casual indifference. "Who's this?"

"Mr. Reed, it's Ann."

Alex froze, instinctively glancing at Paul sitting beside him with Elara. This was Elara's first formal meeting with Paul since returning to the country, and she was all shy smiles and furtive glances.

Alex knew Elara well. Elara had harbored feelings for Paul for years, but given Paul's notorious aversion to women, she'd confessed once before leaving the country, been rejected, and seemingly moved on. Now that a marriage alliance was possible, she'd rushed back home eagerly.

Elara's possessiveness was legendary. Previously, she'd found comfort in knowing Paul disliked female company in general—even if he'd rejected her, no other woman stood a chance either. While abroad, she'd regularly warned off potential rivals, often posing as Paul's girlfriend. Paul never bothered to correct this; it conveniently shielded him from unwanted attention.

Alex knew that if Paul wanted this marriage, neither the Reed nor Adams families would object—the families' histories were deeply intertwined.

Now Ann was calling. Was she still pursuing Paul?

Alex chuckled softly. "What can I do for you?"

"Mr. Reed, I know you're at the bar tonight. Could I meet with you? There's something I'd like to discuss."

Her intentions were transparent. Having been blocked by Paul, she was clearly trying another avenue.

"Ms. White, I'm afraid this isn't a good time. Perhaps another day?"

"Mr. Reed, I can wait until you're finished. Would it be alright if I waited in the main hall?"

She was determined to learn what was happening with Shelley. If Shelley was truly in trouble, Selena would certainly be concerned.

When Elara heard Alex address Ann as "Ms. White," she looked up, contempt flashing in her eyes. This woman just wouldn't give up, would she? She'd already warned her off by phone, yet here she was, still throwing herself at Paul.

Elara glared at Alex, silently urging him to dismiss Ann. Alex pretended not to notice, instead glancing at Paul for his reaction.

But Paul remained impassive, showing no response to Ann's name. A drink sat untouched before him.

Elara quickly mixed a little alcohol into it. "Try this, Paul. I learned about cocktails abroad—these two spirits together create a unique flavor."

Paul took a sip without comment.

Elara discreetly pulled out her phone and texted Emily: [Ann actually followed us to the bar and is trying to meet with Alex. Are you here tonight? Go check it out!]

Emily, who delighted in tormenting Ann, immediately stood up. With two bodyguards in tow, she headed to the main hall where she spotted Ann sitting quietly by the window.

With a contemptuous snort, Emily grabbed a drink from a passing server and marched toward Ann.

Before Ann could react, she was drenched in alcohol. Looking up to meet Emily's gaze, she wasn't the least bit surprised.
