Chapter 319 A Secret
After Selena hung up on Shelley, she called the hospital.
The doctor said, "Mr. Fair showed signs of waking up last night, but today he's stabilized again. We still don't know when he'll fully wake up."
Selena felt a pang in her heart and lowered her eyes.
She was about to head to the hospital when Beatrice called. "Your grandparents are at the Fair family house. They heard about your dad and came over."
Selena's face soured. Her grandparents were from Ridgefield, and she hadn't visited them during her trips there.
After Barbara had gave birth to her, her grandparents despised Barbara. In Ridgefield, newlywed daughters-in-law were supposed to live with their husband's parents for a while. But her dad, James, was the eldest son, and there was a younger brother in the family. Her grandparents always favored the younger son, making James suffer a lot.
After James married Barbara, they were shoved into a rundown side house the next day. On their wedding night, they didn't even have bread for their first meal and had to borrow some.
Her grandparents didn't like Barbara, so they often picked on her while she was alive. But they doted on the younger son.
Because of this, James took Barbara to Silver Bay City to make a life for themselves. They started from a humble street stall and gradually built a company.
Her grandparents went too far. When Selena was born, they pointed at Barbara in the delivery room and cursed her. At that time, James was still setting up stalls in Silver Bay City; only Brian and Erin were there, so Barbara suffered some grievances.
James brought Barbara and baby Selena to Silver Bay City and never contacted his family again.
Selena always thought James did at least one thing right. Even until Barbara's death, she never blamed him; she just lamented her own bad luck.
Now, they suddenly showed up in Silver Bay City and went to the Fair family mansion.
Selena felt something was off. Her grandparents had no idea about James's situation all these years. Why would they suddenly come to Silver Bay City?
Selena asked, "Aunt Beatrice, are you sure?"
Beatrice sneered and handed the phone to the elderly man beside her.
The elderly man was Selena's grandfather, Arthur Fair.
Arthur said, "Selena, your family kept this a tight secret. You've made such a fortune in Silver Bay City and didn't even tell us. James is my son, after all. You live in a big mansion and drive luxury cars worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I'm the last to know. You better come back immediately! Otherwise, I won't let the Fair family have any peace today!"
Selena felt a wave of irritation.
Arthur continued, "Selena, I'm your grandfather. I watched you being born. Now that your dad is in trouble, we all need to sit down and discuss this. You can't enjoy this big mansion all by yourselves. Your grandmother and I have suffered all our lives, but you never thought to give us anything. I think James is in the hospital because he went too far and God couldn't stand it anymore!"
Arthur got more agitated as he spoke. He looked excitedly at the luxurious hall in front of him. He never expected James to be so successful after coming to Silver Bay City.
They kept it a tight secret. If it weren't for someone informing them this time, they wouldn't have known. It was infuriating!
