Chapter 1361 This Is the Woman He Loves

Jason couldn't care less about fruit. He was desperate to meet his daughter.

Before he could answer, a deafening explosion erupted from the other end of the call.

His body went rigid as he shot up from his seat.

"Hello? Hello?"

Nothing but silence. The connection had been severed.

Jason rushed back to his car and sped toward the location where the call originated. Following this route, he quickly arrived at the accident scene where onlookers had gathered and reporters were broadcasting.

Two vehicles had collided, engulfed in towering flames. It was impossible to identify anyone inside.

Jason stood paralyzed, dazed as he stepped out of his car. At his feet lay a photograph—the woman he had searched for all these years. The background was unfamiliar to him. Her smile looked forced, as though it pained her to wear it.

His heart felt like it had been struck by lightning, his pupils contracting sharply.

This was her. The woman he had loved. Right there in the photograph.

He clutched it tightly and tried to run toward the burning vehicles, but bystanders held him back. Seconds later, another explosion rocked the scene.

In his mind, he could still hear the girl's cheerful voice: "Dad, what fruit would you like? I didn't want to come back, but I missed you. I'm on my way to see you..."

As Jason stared at the inferno, something broke inside him. His strength evaporated, and his body went limp.

He opened his mouth but found no words.

After a long moment, with trembling hands, he called Victor, "Dr. Barnes, my daughter..."

But it wasn't Victor who answered—it was Selena.

She answered, "Dr. Barnes is injured. He was in the accident and was shot. He's at the hospital now. Can I help you?"

Victor sat quietly on a nearby hospital bed, seemingly allowing Selena's overstepping boundaries.

"Selena, who's calling?" he asked, looking weakened by his gunshot wound and soaked clothes.

"I'm not sure." She handed him the phone.

Victor looked at the caller ID and immediately knew.

He greeted, "Mr. Smith."

After a few seconds of silence, Jason asked in a grief-stricken voice, "Dr. Barnes, my daughter..."

"Mr. Smith, I had us travel in two separate cars to avoid being targeted. Unfortunately, both cars crashed. Armed men were waiting where I fell into the water. As for your daughter, I can't reach her—the outlook isn't good. Perhaps you should ask Lawrence or Tessa. I couldn't tell you the truth this afternoon because I knew your daughter would face enormous obstacles if she returned to the Smith Villa."

Jason felt as though a giant hand was squeezing his heart. "At least... tell me the child's name."

"Layla Scott. She grew up in Ridgefield. Someone deliberately made her appear a few years younger than she actually was."

As Victor spoke these words, his eyes gleamed with satisfaction, but across the phone line, Jason couldn't see this.

He stood by the roadside, watching the still-burning wreckage, feeling something inside him turn to stone.

After the deadening shock came boundless rage.

Under the overwhelming impact, he collapsed.

Victor ended the call and even kindly sent someone to collect Jason.

Then he tossed the phone aside and gazed at Selena.

Selena smiled at him. "What is it?"

Victor smiled softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "Nothing at all."
