Chapter 1391 Branded Disgraceful and Immoral

Her brow furrowed as she noticed the contemptuous glances from the Adams family when they saw Kai approaching her. Their eyes flickered with mockery and disdain.

Kai had achieved his goal—painting Ann as promiscuous in front of everyone.

Ann pressed her lips together, choosing not to defend herself. In this hostile environment, anything she said would be twisted against her. Better to wait for Paul.

Emily glared at her, clearly itching to slap her again, but Paul's earlier reaction had forced her to back down. She'd just have to wait until Paul regained his memory. If he stopped defending Ann then, she'd make that woman pay dearly.

Not far from the family gathering, a tall man stood watching.

Carter was beside him, his once-spoiled demeanor noticeably subdued. He'd cut ties with the Montague family lately and stopped taking Grace's calls. Now he was investing independently, and this man—Nathaniel Adams—was both his landlord and a black sheep of the Adams family.

Years ago, Nathaniel had been disowned. When he'd attempted to attend Paul's funeral, the family had refused him entry, calling him disgraceful and immoral. Carter hadn't bothered to learn the details.

Nathaniel stood at the far end of the corridor, fidgeting with his fingers, clearly craving a cigarette. When the doctor approached, he immediately asked, "Is Paul really going to be alright?"

The doctor removed his mask and nodded. "He's fine. Just a small blood clot. His memory should return shortly."

Nathaniel sighed with relief, lingered for another ten minutes, then turned to Carter. "Let's go."

"Aren't you waiting for him to come out?" Carter asked, surprised.

"No need."

"Seriously, Nathaniel, what did you do that was so terrible? Everyone in the Adams family despises you, even your parents. Did you try to kill Paul and take his place or something? I can't imagine what else it could be."

Nathaniel stepped into the elevator, with Carter following, slinging an arm around his neck.

Nathaniel gave him a long look before smirking. "Mr. Ashford, some secrets are best left unknown. The only people who keep secrets are the dead."

They'd been investing in a racing team together, making decent money, and the team was gaining recognition. Carter had abandoned his previous social circle and was thriving in his new environment. Though less wealthy than before, he had genuine friends now, particularly Nathaniel.

"Come on, if you were truly capable of something criminal, you wouldn't be struggling financially now," Carter said.

In his experience, the truly ruthless were the ones who made real money. Nathaniel, who fed stray cats, hardly fit that profile.

Nathaniel ruffled his hair as they reached the ground floor, then jumped into a convertible. "You talk too much. Get in, Mr. Ashford."

As Carter slid in, he glanced back at the hospital and sighed. "I'm worried about Raymond too. The Montague family is in chaos. Raymond transferred his shares to John temporarily, but if John has ulterior motives, the Montague Group might change hands entirely."

"Are you questioning Raymond's judgment?"

Carter's lips twisted bitterly. "I once thought my mother and Raymond would always be close. Look how that turned out."

Nathaniel lit a cigarette. "I asked around. Raymond's at the Vistalia underground fighting ring now. I've been there once—rough place, but he seems to have status. Not sure exactly what position he holds, but he's doing well. You should worry about yourself."

"You don't get it! I'm desperate to make serious money so I can join Raymond," Carter said.

That was his current ambition, but his earnings were frustratingly slow.
