Chapter 1560 His Gaze Is Too Penetrating

Raymond's brow furrowed. The voice sounded familiar—not Victor's, but likely his twin brother's. Had they also infiltrated the research facility?

He didn't linger. Though he could hear the conversation, he couldn't see clearly into the room below. Most sections of the ventilation system were sealed off, offering only the narrowest glimpses through tiny gaps. There were no exit points except for the one in his quarters.

After crawling further through the cramped ducts, Raymond discovered another access panel. He didn't immediately open it, instead peering through the slats.

Below lay what appeared to be a glass enclosure housing a boy of about eighteen. The youth's overgrown hair obscured most of his face, but Raymond could clearly see a gemstone pendant around his neck.

The sight triggered a memory—hadn't that woman at the hotel worn a similar stone on her wrist? Such jewelry wasn't uncommon, though, and from this distance, he couldn't make out any engravings.

Suddenly, Atlas opened his eyes, his gaze seemingly connecting with Raymond's through the curtain of hair. The intensity of his stare was unnerving—for a moment, Raymond was convinced the boy could see him, impossible as that seemed through such a tiny opening. By all logic, if discovered, the boy should have raised an alarm immediately.

Yet those exposed eyes simply watched him, betraying no emotion whatsoever. After several seconds, Atlas casually brushed his hair back into place, concealing his eyes once more—clearly choosing not to reveal Raymond's presence.

Raymond's suspicions deepened. This boy was likely one of the facility's many test subjects, but having only just gained access to the core area under Calla's supervision, he'd had no opportunity to gather intelligence.

He tested the access panel cautiously. It would open, allowing him to drop directly into the glass room with the boy. Interesting. After surveying the surrounding area, he noted this appeared to be the only other viable exit point he'd found so far.

Continuing his exploration, Raymond eventually located a third access panel. Unlike the others, this one opened onto complete darkness below. As he prepared to open it, a bestial growl froze him in place.

There was no mistaking it—wild animals lurked beneath. As if confirming his fears, pairs of red eyes gleamed in the darkness below. One wrong move, and whatever creatures waited would tear him to shreds.

He left the panel untouched and pressed on, eventually concluding that the entire research facility had only three access points from the ventilation system: one in his assigned quarters, one above the boy's glass chamber, and one leading to whatever menagerie of beasts he'd just encountered. The last location was too dark to assess properly—he'd need to return during daylight hours.

As Raymond crawled over the ceiling of one glass chamber after another, occasional cries reached his ears.

"Why are you doing this to me? Help!" a man's voice pleaded.

"I don't want the money anymore, please, I don't want it!"

"Spare me, please..."

The man's voice had grown hoarse from screaming. Through a narrow gap, Raymond glimpsed the horrific scene below—the man's lower body was completely gone, submerged in a pool of blood, while researchers calmly recorded data nearby.

They acted as if they couldn't hear his cries at all.
