Chapter 1510 The Truth That Cut Too Deep
The truth he'd desperately sought cut too deep. He couldn't bring himself to kill Raymond and Selena, couldn't bring himself to do anything at all.
Mario quickly vanished into the shadows, unwilling to say another word.
Raymond gathered Selena back into his arms, a heaviness settling in his chest. Gunfire continued to echo around them—the Soto family locked in battle with K's forces. For whatever reason, K had summoned an army to Mystic Prison to intercept them.
"Stay close," Raymond commanded, cradling Selena as he led the others toward the secret passage Emilio had revealed.
Their path was littered with casualties, the air thick with the metallic stench of blood. Upon reaching their destination and confirming Eldon was still with them, they hurried into the tunnel.
Explosions continued to rock the ground above, but they were beyond that chaos now. According to Emilio, this passage led straight to the shoreline of Mystic Prison, where Lawrence and Walter's men waited with helicopters. Tonight had devolved into complete mayhem, with Lawrence and Walter's presence keeping K's forces at bay.
Raymond's group collapsed at the tunnel entrance, chests heaving. The sprint had exhausted even the fittest among them.
He gently brushed his fingertips across Selena's cheek. "Ten-minute break," he announced.
Seven or eight men immediately slumped to the ground. Eldon leaned against the wall, his forehead glistening with sweat. His gaze traveled down the dark passageway, uncertainty in his voice. "Once we get through this tunnel... that's the outside world?"
Raymond nodded.
A faint smile tugged at Eldon's lips as he placed his hand over his heart. His desperate gamble had paid off—he would finally see the world beyond.
His phone rang—likely someone from the Soto family. The artifact was still in Raymond's possession, and with tonight's failure to locate Eldon, they were growing anxious.
Eldon considered ignoring it. He was just one step away from freedom. Glancing at the screen, he saw it was Leo, an old friend.
"Eldon, where are you?" Leo's voice carried through the speaker.
Unlike Eldon, Leo had always been content with life on the island. Eldon was the only one who had ever yearned to break free of its constraints.
"I'm going to see the outside world," Eldon replied.
"Your grandfather asked me to retrieve the artifact," Leo said. "Since you're leaving, you might as well hand it over."
Eldon considered this. The artifact was useless to him now, and Leo's request wasn't surprising. After the catastrophe that had nearly wiped out the Schmidt family, Leo must have sought help from the Soto family to preserve what remained of their lineage.
He turned to Raymond. "Let me have the artifact. I'll give it to Leo—he must be nearby."
"Be back in ten minutes," Raymond replied.
"I will."
Taking the artifact, Eldon couldn't suppress a smile. "Raymond, entrusting this to you was the biggest gamble of my life. Thankfully, I won that bet."
Raymond said nothing. He admired Eldon's temperament—that outward calm masking an inner ruthlessness. Few would dare hand over a family heirloom to an outsider so readily.
