Chapter 1602 Someone is Rising to Power
In Vesperia, Selena had been glued to the news back home, making sure Elara was getting dragged online. Only then did she feel a bit better.
She didn't bother calling Ann, figuring she'd just end up apologizing again.
Right now, Ann needed some peace, a chance to rest.
Selena rubbed her tired eyes and set her laptop aside.
The woman next to her reminded her, "You should avoid screens now that you're pregnant."
Selena went to the bathroom to wash her face. When she came out, her eyes were still red.
There had been no news from Raymond. She hadn't slept well all week, often waking up from nightmares in the middle of the night.
Now, after dealing with the online drama back home, she felt utterly exhausted.
Another day passed with no word from Raymond, and Selena was starting to lose her patience.
She called Richard, hoping he might have some leads.
Richard replied, "Nothing yet, Selena. Don't worry too much. The research base is complex; they might just be having trouble contacting us."
"Any updates on Mystic Prison?" Selena added.
Was Octavia still refusing to communicate with anyone?
Mentioning Mystic Prison, Richard's smile faded significantly.
"Same as before. She screams whenever anyone approaches her. Communication is impossible. The engineering team is speeding up their work, but the basement's design is so intricate that it will take months to figure out."
Selena's heart grew heavier. She bit her lip and hung up.
No matter how worried she was about Raymond, all she could do was wait at the hotel.
Meanwhile, at the research base, Raymond had spent several days mapping out the routes, but he still hadn't found Lawrence. However, he had exchanged a lot of information with Clifton.
It was nighttime again, and he brought another batch of drugs to Experiment Box 8.
The researchers hadn't rested for days. When they saw him, they were too exhausted to even greet him.
The boy in Experiment Box 8 had gone berserk the previous night. The higher-ups had wanted to take him out and use him as entertainment.
But the boy had torn two people apart in front of everyone and was quickly sedated and returned to the box.
Now, his fingernails were stained with blood, looking quite eerie.
Every time Raymond delivered the drugs, their eyes would meet.
He had been visiting the connection point of the boy's experiment box every night, and each time their eyes would lock for a moment.
Raymond knew the boy recognized him, but hadn't told anyone.
Could the boy even speak? Since arriving, Raymond had only heard him roar and scream.
After delivering the drugs, Raymond returned to Calla's core lab.
Calla was always engrossed in her research and rarely initiated conversation. When she did speak, it was mostly about the effects of the drugs.
Raymond had already decided that tonight he would create some chaos to quickly figure out the layout of the higher-ups' area.
He stood at the lab bench, handing Calla the reagents as usual, but this time she didn't take them. Instead, she frowned.
Raymond noticed her hand was trembling.
She activated a nearby device, which projected a small screen. Faces appeared on the screen, all wearing masks except for one—the uniformed man from the hall.
The uniformed man sat with his legs crossed, resting his chin on one hand, a smirk on his face as he argued with someone.
Suddenly, the person in the main seat spoke up. "Dr. Griffin, what do you think? After all, you created this weapon."
It was a meeting about the weapon's fate. The higher-ups were discussing it.
Everyone had seen the weapon's ferocity, and several council members wanted it, but there was only one weapon.
There were seven core higher-ups, all present in the meeting.
Calla lowered her lashes, her gaze fixed on the only unmasked person.
Her face was projected onto the central screen in the meeting room, with the lab behind her.
"If everyone wants it, then no one should get it. Let it stay in the experiment box for a few more days. I heard the council election is only a few days away?"
There were twenty council members in total. Though it seemed like a lot, they were high-ranking officials.
Because the research base's pills affected the entire world, the council members had significant privileges.
The unmasked man raised an eyebrow, his smirk widening. "Yes, only a few days left. Several members are stepping down this time."
With members stepping down, new ones would rise.
Last time, Callahad vetoed Zaid's promotion. She wondered who the higher-ups were this time.
