Chapter 1408 Selena, You Must Die Here Today
Selena wasn't alone—Raymond had insisted she be accompanied by two highly skilled bodyguards who never left her side. After everything she'd been through, she wasn't taking any chances either.
As they entered the restaurant lobby, a detector beeped. The attendant smiled politely at the bodyguards.
"I'm sorry, but weapons aren't permitted inside."
The bodyguards frowned, though this was standard policy at this establishment—one reason it was a popular negotiation spot for Vistalia's elite. Not only were weapons prohibited, but phones had to be checked at the door as well.
The bodyguards stopped Selena, their tone cautious. "Ms. Fair, perhaps we should meet Mr. Butler elsewhere. This restaurant has strict rules—they don't allow anything inside."
"Is this policy the same for everyone?" Selena asked.
"Yes, no exceptions."
Selena hesitated, then tried calling Steve. As expected, he didn't answer.
With no way to contact him about changing locations, she decided to comply with the rules.
"It's fine. If everyone follows the same protocol, we'll do the same."
She handed over her phone, and her reluctant bodyguards surrendered their guns, knives, and phones.
When Selena stepped into the lobby and saw Lawrence, a wave of unease washed over her. She took a step back, but the main door had already closed behind her.
She raised an eyebrow, intending to avoid confrontation by taking the elevator to the third floor where she was supposed to meet Steve. Before she could move, however, about thirty men emerged from all sides, surrounding her and her bodyguards.
Now she understood—Lawrence had been waiting for her.
"What's the meaning of this, Mr. Smith?" she asked.
Though she and Tessa had their differences, this level of orchestration seemed extreme.
Lawrence's gaze was ice-cold. "You know exactly what you've done, Selena. You won't leave here alive today. I owe Tessa that much."
Selena frowned. She'd been held captive by K recently, and after escaping, had stayed at the underground fighting arena. She couldn't recall any recent conflict with Tessa—in fact, she'd even shown mercy by helping her a few days ago.
When her bodyguards prepared to fight, she stopped them. With only two against so many, the odds were terrible, and she saw no reason to sacrifice their lives.
She turned to the bodyguards. "This is a personal matter between Mr. Smith and me. Let these men go."
Lawrence smirked. It was surprising that such a cold woman would care about others, but he had no interest in harming innocent bystanders.
"Don't worry. Once you're dead, these two will leave safely. I'm not afraid of Raymond's retaliation."
The bodyguards tried to resist, but Lawrence clapped his hands, and twenty more men appeared.
Selena almost laughed at the excessive force Lawrence had assembled just for her.
Taking a deep breath, she told her bodyguards: "You're outnumbered and unarmed. Don't struggle. When you get out, find Raymond."
The bodyguards remained silent, bound to follow her orders.
Lawrence had Selena escorted to a waiting car.
As she settled into the seat, she was still puzzled. "Is Mr. Smith really willing to go this far for a fake sister?"
"Shut up!" Lawrence snapped.
Just thinking about the video made him want to tear her apart. How could she speak so casually, as if Tessa's dignity and life meant nothing?
Selena gave a cold laugh. "I just feel sorry for your actual sister who died. She was killed because of Tessa, yet you never shed a tear for her. Instead, you're rushing to avenge Tessa. Don't you find that absurd?"
Lawrence never hit women, but he couldn't restrain himself. He slapped her hard across the face.
Selena's head jerked to the side, blood appearing at the corner of her mouth.
"What do you know!" he shouted. "Do you have any idea what you've done to Tessa? Her life is ruined—she's become a laughingstock and will never be able to marry! If you had any conscience, Selena, you'd apologize to her! But even now, you show no remorse for her situation!"
Selena licked the blood from her lip, thoroughly disgusted with him.
Unfortunately, with her hands bound, she couldn't return the slap.
