Chapter 78 Can You Give Me a Ride?

Selena slept right through till noon, waking up with a killer headache and her phone buzzing like mad. She quickly hit the answer button.

It was Erin, sounding all worried. "Selena, I've called you a bunch of times and you didn't pick up. Everything okay? I was about to send Brian to check on you."

Selena glanced at her missed calls; Erin had called five times. No wonder she was freaking out.

"I'm fine," Selena said. "Just stayed up too late last night and was too tired to hear anything."

Erin let out a sigh of relief. "Are you still going to visit Barbara's grave today?"

"Yeah, I'm up and getting ready. I'll grab some flowers and head over."

"Brian already got the flowers," Erin said. "He's waiting for you outside Harmony Garden. Just meet him when you're ready, and he'll take you there."

Selena hung up and got ready in record time before heading out to meet Brian.

Brian handed her the flowers. "Erin said you slept late last night. I'll drive, and you can catch some more rest in the passenger seat."

"Thanks, Uncle Brian," Selena said.

She got into the passenger seat and caught a faint whiff of gasoline. Brian had been driving this car for years, and despite regular maintenance, the smell of gasoline and leather lingered.

The ride was bumpy, but they eventually reached their destination.

She got out with the flowers and arrived at Barbara's grave.

Selena visited every year. Sometimes, if she was busy, she'd come a few days early or late, but she knew Barbara wouldn't hold it against her.

Thinking about the recent troubles with the Fair family put her in a bad mood. She wanted to talk to Barbara alone.

Brian stood silently, not far away.

Barbara's grave had been tidied up a bit. Selena knelt down, her eyes filled with a quiet sorrow as she paid her respects.

After finishing everything, Selena discreetly wiped her eyes and walked over to Brian.

"Uncle Brian, let's go," she said.

Brian was smoking. Seeing Selena's red eyes, he wanted to say something but didn't. He just held his cigarette in one hand and patted her shoulder with the other.

As they were about to get in the car, a motorcycle approached. A man and a woman were on it. After stopping in front of them, Megan got off and snatched the car keys from Brian's hand, annoyed. "Do you know I had plans with friends today? I told you not to use the car for these three days, but you didn't listen. You can walk back; my friends are waiting for me."

The Layman family only had this one car, which had been used for years. It was a low-end BMW that had cost a few tens of grand back then.

Megan needed the car to show off. When she saw it wasn't there, she asked Erin and found out it had been driven here.

Now that she had the keys, she got in, slammed the door, and sped off.

Selena frowned. "Uncle Brian, do you and Aunt Erin always let her treat you like this?"

She had always known Megan was unreasonable, but she didn't realize she had become this arrogant.

Brian felt his dignity crumble before Selena.

The worst part was that Selena and Brian were now stranded. Were they really going to walk back?

It was too far from home; walking would take at least two hours.

"Uncle Brian, I'm sorry you had to go through that. I'll call a colleague to pick us up," Selena said.

Selena had never met someone as selfish as Megan, but since Brian and Erin tolerated it, she couldn't say much.

It was all because of her cousin Jacob Layman. Brian and Erin always felt they owed Megan.

"Uncle Brian, I'm fine. I just feel bad for you. She hasn't worked much over the years, and you give her your entire salary every month. Who knows what she spends it on, and she still treats you so poorly. If my mom knew..." Selena paused and didn't continue, slowly walking back the way they came.

Brian, like a scolded child, stiffly followed.

A car horn sounded in the distance, and two cars stopped in front of them.

Han rolled down the window and saw Brian. "You came here without a car?"

Brian quickly explained, "The car was taken. Han, can you give us a ride?"

Han glanced at the back seat, where two important guests responsible for developing the Ridgefield tourist area were sitting.

The two guests were very accommodating. "Get in, but there's only room for one. She'll have to ask the car in front if they can take her."

The car in front had only two individuals, and no one else dared to get in.

Selena realized it was Raymond's car.

She hadn't anticipated Raymond was the investor coming to develop Ridgefield's tourism.

She walked to the car window and politely knocked. "Mr. Montague, we ran into some trouble. Could you give me a ride?"
