Chapter 367 The Real Husband and the Fake Husband
Sure enough, when she saw Raymond, Alan, and even Lucas in the room, her eyebrows shot up.
Her real husband and her fake husband were both here.
She felt a bit uneasy.
But Caterlington grabbed her hand and walked straight to Alan. "If I knew you're just next door earlier, I should've come over sooner. Good thing I asked around."
Alan was stressed because Lucas had lost something of Raymond's, but Caterlington showing up brightened his mood. "Want to join us for a drink?"
Caterlington then noticed Raymond and said to him, "Oh, you're here too. You two are quite the pair."
Olivia, seeing Selena walk in with Caterlington, had a flash of disgust in her eyes. "You really are a playboy. The girl with you a few days ago wasn't this one."
To Caterlington, it was a joke.
But to Selena, it was a dig, making her seem easily replaceable.
Caterlington, being a high-society veteran, caught on quickly and decided to defend Selena. "Don't get the wrong idea. Selena's not my date; she's my future business partner. She's an interior designer, and we'll be working together a lot."
Olivia, shut down like that, just smiled faintly.
Raymond, however, gave Selena a cold, probing look.
After all, Lucas was right next to Selena, picking something up from the floor.
Caterlington pulled Selena to sit down, but she signaled him to go ahead first, then leaned down and softly asked Lucas, "What are you looking for?"
Lucas, sweating bullets, felt like he'd seen a savior when she walked in. "Mr. Montague's cufflink. I lost one. It's probably worth a lot. You go ahead; I'll join once I find it."
They were speaking softly, so no one else knew what they were talking about.
Raymond looked away.
His vibe got colder, but he didn't look at the whispering fake couple.
Selena got lucky; she spotted the cufflink hidden in a potted plant. It hadn't fallen to the ground, so Lucas missed it.
She picked it up and handed it to Lucas.
Lucas sighed in relief, looking at her gratefully.
He quickly reported to Raymond. "Sir, I found it. I'll put it in your suit pocket."
Alan, worried Raymond might be mad, told Lucas, "Go ask the waiter when the last dessert will be served."
This was a hint for Lucas to leave and not come back.
Lucas got it, nodded, and softly told Selena, "I'm leaving. As a girl, you shouldn't drink too much later."
Selena nodded, worried he might slip up in front of Raymond, and instructed him in an undertone, "In front of people who might know me, always say you're married. If someone asks who your wife is, just brush it off."
Lucas thought about his earlier response to Raymond but figured it should be fine. "Okay, don't worry. I got it."
They nodded to each other, and Lucas left.
As soon as he left, Alan quickly offered Raymond a drink. "Lucas just got promoted not long ago. If he has offended you in any way, I hope you can be understanding."
Raymond chuckled lightly, his sharp gaze shifting to Selena and then back. "Of course, I won't be angry. After all, he's Selena's friend."
Alan caught on and quickly invited Selena to sit down, adding a bit of gossip. "You and Lucas are close?"
Selena stayed calm, lightly raising her glass. "Yeah, we're pretty close."
Alan asked again, "By the way, you're so young and beautiful. Are you married?"
Selena nodded graciously. "Yes, I am."
Alan began to flatter her. "Whoever married you is really lucky."
Compared to her straightforward admission, Lucas's earlier claim of being single seemed suspicious.
Raymond, watching all this, showed no reaction, just swilling the wine around in his glass.
Lucas's reluctance to admit it was surely out of fear that marriage would hinder his career.
Raymond set down his glass, thinking that someone like Lucas hardly deserved her special attention.
