Chapter 1360 Is It Because of Love for Him?
At the bridge with its damaged guardrail, a crowd had already gathered. Some were calling the police while reporters were broadcasting live from the scene.
Selena sat in a new car, her clothes soaked through just like Victor's. He took a clean towel and gently dried her hair as she sat there like an obedient puppet.
In the past, she would have pushed him away and dried her hair herself. But now, a voice deep in her subconscious whispered, 'He won't hurt you. Listen to him.'
Selena leaned back and closed her eyes.
Victor moved very close to her, so close he could count each of her eyelashes. After a long silence, he finally spoke, "You're looking for Raymond because you love him?"
Without hesitation, Selena opened her eyes, meeting his intense gaze. "Yes, I love him. More than anyone."
"What if he marries someone else?"
"Who? That fake daughter Tessa? Dr. Barnes, didn't you say you knew who the real daughter was? That you'd brought her here? Just call Jason and tell him."
"Selena, there were two cars involved in tonight's accident. One was the car you and I were in. The other contained the real daughter. I've already given the license plate to Jason, along with DNA results. Jason is at that crash site right now. I wonder how he'll react to Tessa, the impostor, after seeing his biological daughter dead—especially knowing his own son orchestrated it all."
Selena's heart skipped a beat. She stared at Victor for ten long seconds.
Victor smiled, tracing his finger lightly across the tip of her nose. "What's wrong? Do you think Lawrence got what he deserved?"
Selena didn't realize that each of his gestures crossed another boundary. He was taming her, making her adapt to his presence. But how could she see clearly when she was caught in his web?
She gazed out the window, her lashes lowered. "I just think Mr. Smith is terribly unfortunate. After searching for his daughter all these years, their first meeting becomes their last goodbye."
Victor studied her profile, his fingers curling slightly. After several minutes of silent contemplation, he pulled her into his embrace.
Selena stiffened, but then heard his soothing words.
"Perhaps it's fate. But Mr. Smith has endured so much—he'll survive this too."
Selena remained silent. Something felt wrong, but she couldn't pinpoint what. Her face pressed against Victor's chest as she tried to make sense of it all. Eventually, the gentle rocking of the car lulled her into sleep.
Victor's hand hesitated before continuing to stroke her hair. He asked the driver, "The dosage?"
"Mr. Barnes, it's still at maximum strength. I'm concerned Ms. Fair can't handle it."
"It doesn't matter," he replied, his tone indifferent as he studied her face.
His eyes revealed nothing, as if she were merely a test subject.
The car continued forward, its destination unknown to all but him.
Meanwhile, at the other accident scene, Jason stood silently holding a DNA report and a photograph of a young woman. The moment he'd seen the photo, his eyes had lit up.
Just thirty minutes earlier, he had received a call from an unfamiliar girl who sweetly called him "Dad."
He thought he'd misheard. He'd been driving to meet Victor at the time.
"Miss, I think you have the wrong number."
"Dad, it's me—your biological daughter. I'm on my way to see you. Dr. Barnes explained everything but was concerned for my safety, so he hid me at his villa. He wanted to gauge your and my brothers' reactions first. I heard the Smith family already has a daughter. I was worried Tessa might come after me, given her temperament. I didn't want to return, but you've been searching for me for so long."
Jason had slammed on the brakes, thinking he must have misheard.
His daughter? Had Victor really found his daughter? It seemed unlikely—just that afternoon, Victor had claimed to have no information.
"Dad, I've sent you DNA results and my photo. In twenty minutes, I'll finally see you. I've missed you so much—I even brought pictures of Mom."
Jason's mind raced. He received the DNA report and photo en route. The results confirmed their father-daughter relationship, and the girl in the photo strongly resembled Octavia, though much younger.
His heart pounding, Jason had rushed to meet Victor at their arranged location.
After waiting at the café for ten minutes, he received another call from the girl.
She said, "Dad, I'm passing a fruit stand. Would you like me to bring you something?"
Jason's heart had swelled with emotion.
