Chapter 1429 All She Wanted Was to Survive
But the security men ignored her pleas completely, even as her palms turned red from pounding against the bars.
"No! You wouldn't dare! Lawrence, help me!" she screamed.
No matter how loudly she called, Lawrence never appeared on the boat. As the cage was about to be lowered into the dark waters, she finally shouted in desperation:
"Tell Lawrence that if he kills me, Jason will never wake up! It wasn't a stress-induced collapse—I poisoned him! Lawrence brought me to his bedside, and I deliberately administered the drug to kill Jason. Richard interrupted me before I could give him the full dose, but that single drop was enough to keep Jason in a coma forever!"
The security guards' expressions changed instantly. They had kept their phones on speaker the entire time, meaning Lawrence had heard every word Tessa just said.
Back at the mansion, Lawrence's phone lay beside him as he'd already consumed half a bottle of hard liquor. He desperately wanted to drink himself into oblivion, yet found himself becoming more painfully lucid instead.
He remembered with brutal clarity how he had forced the drug down Selena's throat to silence her, how he had slapped her. These memory fragments flashed through his mind, torturing him piece by piece.
Now, hearing Tessa's confession, his last shred of compassion vanished. He gripped his phone, his voice turning glacial. "What did you just say?"
The guard quickly held the phone up to Tessa's face.
Tessa had nothing to lose now. Lawrence was already trying to kill her; whatever she did, he clearly despised her. Her only goal was survival.
"Lawrence, didn't you hear me? I obtained the drug from a mysterious organization. It's potent enough to keep Jason comatose for life. Think about it—if it were merely emotional shock, how could he remain unconscious for so many days? Only I know where the antidote is. If you kill me, Jason becomes a vegetable forever!"
Lawrence had always believed Tessa was fundamentally good—spoiled, perhaps, but not beyond redemption. Now, hearing her words, he realized how blind he had been.
Jason had never denied Tessa anything, raising her in luxury since childhood. Yet here she was, repaying kindness with treachery.
"Tessa, I never thought you capable of this."
Tessa felt a pang, not of remorse but of hatred—hatred that Lawrence was no longer on her side. Hadn't he promised to protect her forever?
"I'm capable of anything! Blame Selena if you must. How perfect everything would have been if she'd never returned! If she weren't the Smith family's daughter, we could all have lived happily. Everything is Selena's fault—she completely ruined me!"
Lawrence was speechless. As the Smith family heir who understood the Vistalia social circle intimately, he was well acquainted with the ugliness of human nature. But Tessa's betrayal eclipsed it all.
He gripped his phone tightly, taking several moments to compose himself before asking, "Where is the antidote?"
"Bring me back to the mansion first, then I'll tell you."
A cold glint flashed in Lawrence's eyes as he instructed the guards: "Bring her back."
Tessa sighed with relief, believing her life was spared.
Little did she know that sometimes living could be more excruciating than death. Lawrence, having abandoned all affection for her, could be ruthlessly creative in his punishment. While Tessa now celebrated her survival, within days she would be begging for death.
But at this moment, still unaware of what Lawrence was capable of, she believed he would remain the gentle man he had always been toward her alone.
