Chapter 35
With a heavy heart, Selena got into the car. About twenty minutes later, she pulled up to Montague Manor.
The servant opened the door and, seeing her, a flicker of annoyance crossed his face. "Ms. Fair, what are you doing here again? Mrs. Montague isn't home."
Selena noticed that aside from the cleaning staff, the hall was pretty much empty.
She was about to ask if Raymond had been around, but the servant had already turned away, clearly impatient.
Honestly, every time she showed up, Catherine was annoyed to see her. Everyone knew she and Raymond were headed for a divorce, so they didn't even bother pretending to be polite.
"Who's here?" The garden door opened, and a pretty girl, Mia Montague, stood there with a light smile. "Is it the new maid? She's quite pretty."
There was no malice in her eyes, just a simple question.
The servant chuckled, a hint of disdain in his eyes.
But Selena didn't react as he expected. Instead, she calmly said, "No, the maids here wear uniforms. I'm here to see Mr. Montague."
Selena was too composed, without any extra emotion.
Mia realized she had asked a silly question and quickly apologized, "Sorry, I didn't notice. Are you here to see my cousin Raymond? He left about half an hour ago."
Cousin?
'Cousin?' Selena looked Mia up and down and smiled, "Alright, thanks for letting me know."
Selena had something important to do, and feeling a bit guilty for the misunderstanding, Mia added, "Raymond probably went back to the Montague Group for a meeting. I heard him on the phone; he must have just stepped out for a bit."
After speaking, Mia looked at the servant, her brows furrowed, "Since this lady is a guest, why haven't you offered her a drink? Don't you have any manners?"
The servant pursed his lips, about to retort, but Selena responded first. "It's okay."
The servant breathed a sigh of relief, gaining confidence from Selena's words, "Ms. Montague, you see, she said it's okay."
"Really?" Mia's expression turned cold. "You don't need to stay here any longer."
The servant was startled. The Montague family offered great benefits, and losing this job would be a disaster.
The servant looked to Selena for help, but she didn't respond.
A single misstep wouldn't have bothered her, but the repeated nature of his actions revealed a blatant disrespect for her.
Besides, it wasn't her decision to fire the servant; it was Mia's.
The servant's face went pale, trembling as he was led away.
Mia turned to Selena, "So, what's your deal with Raymond?"
"Interior designer," Selena replied.
"I thought so! You're the one working on Manston Manor, right? Everyone's been buzzing about you. Getting picked by Raymond is a big deal," Mia added.
There was a spark of excitement in her eyes as she stepped closer. "I'm Mia, nineteen years old. You look about my age, that's impressive."
At nineteen, sheltered by the Montague family's wealth and love, she retained a childlike innocence.
"No, I had to work hard to get Mr. Montague's order," Selena said.
Mia's thoughts were simple; she never considered why an interior designer would come to Montague Manor to find Raymond. Even if it was for work, it should be at the Montague Group.
"You don't have to be modest. My compliments are sincere. You're much better than that Olivia." Finding someone with similar interests, Mia became chatty. "You must be prettier than my unseen sister-in-law. I still don't know what she looks like."
Selena's lips curved slightly. Though she hadn't appeared at the Montague Group, she was a topic of conversation among the Montague family.
Curious about Selena, Mia pulled her to sit down. "I really have friends asking about you. Do you have time to help with a few houses?"
Though she knew taking Raymond's order would boost her reputation, Selena was still a bit surprised. She smiled and shook her head. "Ms. Montague, I'm sorry, while serving Mr. Montague, I don't plan to take on other projects. If your friends need help, my colleagues can assist them."
"Well," Mia was a bit disappointed but then her eyes lit up again. "Since you can design, you must know how to draw, right? Come with me."
Without any hesitation, she took Selena's hand and led her upstairs.
Mia had been staying at Montague Manor recently because it was close to where she and her friends planned to sketch.
"Could you take a look at this painting for me? Is there anything that needs to be changed? I've been pondering it all afternoon." Mia pouted. "I was going to ask Raymond for advice, but he seemed upset. I heard he had an appointment with his wife, but she didn't show up?"
