Chapter 364 Selena Woke Up from the Dream With a Start
Selena didn't text back; she just set her phone down.
Exhausted, she went straight to wash up and hit the sack.
When she woke up the next day, she saw three new text messages on her phone.
James: [I'm 53 now and suddenly have nothing left. I don't even dare to die and face your mom, afraid she'll scold me.]
James: [I checked the contract with Apex Holdings. Kenny signed an extra agreement, cutting the six-month period to one month. Apex has already called me. The company is in a debt of $1.4 billion, and the company doesn't have that kind of cash flow.]
James: [We might be buried in huge debts. Transferring shares to you now is pointless; you'd get nothing, which is actually a form of protection for you. Selena, I'm really sorry.]
Seeing the last text, Selena felt a knot in her stomach.
She quickly called James, but a nurse picked up.
"James had a sudden shock last night and told us not to inform you. His will to live isn't optimistic."
Selena opened her mouth but couldn't get any words out.
James wasn't just hit by recent events; it was also about the company.
The company was his baby, something he built from scratch. But now, in his fifties, he had nothing left because he trusted the wrong people.
The people closest to him all betrayed him.
Even his friend's death might be tied to this mess.
No one could endure such a blow.
Selena rubbed her temples. The Fair family’s contract, signed by Kenny with the official seal, was legally binding and approved by the entire board. The company must be in chaos now.
Unless they could find a way to strong-arm Apex Holdings into canceling the contract, they were stuck. But Apex had been pulling these dirty tricks for a long time, forcing many companies into bankruptcy.
No one had managed to bring them down. How could she, alone, fight an entire company?
Selena searched online for Apex Holdings' president, Bert Thompson, and found several shell companies under his name linked to Caterlington's father, Kross.
Thinking of Caterlington, Selena's mind cleared. When she had mentioned Apex Holdings to him before, he seemed knowledgeable and said Raymond was well aware of their shady operations and had blacklisted them. Raymond's investigation data on Apex must be more complete. He probably knew Apex's weaknesses but was too proud to act.
Selena sat on the sofa and called the hospital to check on James.
It was a nurse who picked up again. "He keeps muttering Selena and crying in his sleep. His hair turned completely grey overnight."
Selena froze.
James's hair turned grey later than most men, which he always prided himself on, saying that having late grey hair made him look younger than his peers.
Selena couldn't imagine what James looked like with grey hair overnight.
She held her phone, opened her mouth, but didn't know what to say.
At noon, tired out, she fell asleep on the sofa and ended up dreaming of Barbara.
In fact, Selena could hardly remember what Barbara looked like anymore. The clearest memory was when Arthur and Victoria wanted to hit her, and Barbara shielded her.
That was when she realized her gender was not welcomed.
That day, when she and Barbara took the bus back to Silver Bay City, the people in the neighboring seats were discussing how Ridgefield valued boys over girls.
Selena nestled in Barbara's arms, having just been beaten, and Barbara shielded her from all the hits.
At that moment, she could feel Barbara's thin body trembling slightly.
The young Selena looked up and asked, "Mom, what does it mean to value boys over girls?"
Barbara's face was a bit blurry. They were poor back then, and there weren't many photos.
Barbara stiffened and held her tightly.
She explained fondly, "It means boys carry the heavy things, and girls carry the light things."
When Selena felt wronged, she might dream of Barbara but this just happened less often after that.
But today, she did.
In her dream, Barbarba cooed gently, "Selena, the ones I worry about the most are you and your dad. I'm afraid he'll be lonely, and I'm worried you might marry the wrong person. I miss you both so much."
Selena woke up from the dream with a start, her throat feeling sore.
