Chapter 1513 This Is a Warning

Sometimes she'd attempt to escape a dozen times in a single day, but the man toyed with her like a predator playing with wounded prey, savoring her struggles.

The initial dozen attempts gradually dwindled to seven or eight, then five or six, until finally she managed only two escape attempts per day.

Now, after a full year, the thought of fleeing this place had been completely extinguished from her mind—exactly as the man had intended.

Octavia heard the man's voice but refused to acknowledge it. He continued speaking, "Don't you want to know where Selena is?"

At these words, Octavia's eyelashes trembled slightly. Her hand, hanging at her side, twitched as her gaze fixed on a distant point. The man's voice echoed in her mind as if emanating from deep within her bones.

"Where... where is she?" Her voice was hoarse and broken.

"She came to see you, tried to take you away, but she can barely protect herself."

Octavia lowered her eyes, and after a long silence, she capitulated, "Please, just leave her alone."

After she spoke, the entire basement fell into profound silence, as if even the surrounding machinery had vanished. The man's fingertip paused on the screen, his face twisted with malevolent satisfaction. "You certainly protect her well."

Octavia said nothing, merely leaning back against the wall, her face deathly pale. Whether he would actually spare Selena remained to be seen.

Raymond had been carrying Selena for nearly an hour when she regained consciousness. The first thing she did upon waking was cough violently. Raymond held her close, using the corner of his shirt to wipe her lips.

"Does it hurt badly?"

She didn't respond, merely turning her head away.

Raymond's footsteps halted, his tone flat and distant, "Are you angry with me?"

"No."

"Selena, I couldn't bear to watch you and the child come to harm. I'll find a way to rescue her later."

After delivering this promise, he resumed walking with determined strides.

Selena could smell blood and gunpowder clinging to him. She knew tonight was chaotic at Mystic Prison, and Raymond must have done a lot to get her out.

Her heart simply ached with grief. In her memories, Barbara had been powerful yet gentle, always ready to embrace her and speak in soft, reassuring tones while maintaining unwavering resolve. Selena's own character had been largely shaped by Barbara's influence—how else could she have survived safely all these years after Barbara's departure?

"Raymond, where are we?"

"Underground tunnels. The mysterious contact at Mystic Prison gave me this route. Lawrence and Walter's men are waiting at the landing point. Tonight the island is a battlefield with multiple factions—I don't have the confidence to protect you up there."

His pace never slowed as he held her tightly against him.

"What about Mario?"

Mario had been speaking incoherently earlier, and now he'd vanished entirely.

"No idea. Let's assume he's disappeared for good."

Selena sensed his troubled mood and pressed her head against his chest. At least this mission had confirmed Barbara's location.

After another half hour of walking, they finally felt a breeze carrying the briny scent of seawater. Raymond exhaled with relief, but when they reached the exit, they found themselves facing an endless expanse of ocean, with the tunnel opening positioned high above the water's surface.

Just as Raymond prepared to carry Selena down the winding path, gunshots erupted around them—not from one location, but multiple positions surrounding their exit. Though neither of them was hit, deep bullet holes appeared in the wall behind them. The shooters were sending a clear warning.
