Chapter 1413 If I'd Been Even Slightly Delayed

On the other side, in the helicopter, Richard had a thousand thoughts racing through his mind after Raymond ended the call.

He licked his lips nervously before finally speaking in a hoarse voice, "Can we go faster...?"

Raymond stared coldly ahead, as if he hadn't heard.

Richard clenched his fists, overwhelmed with self-loathing. His sister had been right in front of him all this time, and he'd never recognized her.

A lump formed in his throat, leaving him speechless.

Raymond piloted the helicopter toward their destination, his face like stone.

"If Selena dies," he said, his words carried away by the wind, "Lawrence will follow her to the grave."

Richard felt the strength drain from his body at those words.

Before falling into a coma, Smith had declared that if his sister was still alive, all the family shares would belong to her.

As her brother, Richard had desperately wanted his little sister to be alive, believing her presence would restore their family. But now that he knew Selena was his sister, he understood the reality of the situation.

Selena had always been clear-headed about relationships: she was good to those who were good to her.

But cross her once, and she'd hit back tenfold.

She was strong, calm, and decisive—infinitely superior to Tessa.

This was his real sister.

He wanted to cry but couldn't, tears welling in his eyes without falling.

Though never superstitious, Richard found himself praying, begging God to keep Selena safe.

As the helicopter hovered above the mansion, Raymond handed him binoculars.

"Find them," Raymond ordered, his voice cold but steady.

Looking through the binoculars, Richard's blood froze as he saw Selena locked in a metal cage.

"Hurry, Raymond! Lower us down!" His voice cracked with panic. "They're about to push her into the river!"

Sweat coated his palms as he shouted, "Get lower—I'll jump down and save her!"

Without a word, Raymond brought the helicopter down.

Just as the cage hit the water, a tremendous splash erupted as Richard dove in. The men in the small boat froze in shock.

"It's Mr. Smith!" one of them exclaimed.

They had been ready to shoot, but seeing Richard, no one dared. The boat had drifted some distance from shore, making it impossible to immediately alert Lawrence.

The men exchanged uncertain glances, concerned about Richard's safety.

They stopped the boat, waiting for him to resurface.

The moment Richard hit the water, his heart pounded wildly. Tears mixed with river water stung his eyes, though he didn't realize he was crying—he only felt the burning pain as if his eyes might explode.

If they'd been delayed even slightly, Selena would have...

What would happen to Jason then? To Lawrence? To the entire Smith family?

All he could do now was swim downward with all his might, pushing the metal cage upward until it broke the surface.

He glared at the men in the boat.

"What are you waiting for?" he shouted. "Get down here and help, or I'll have you shot!"

"But Mr. Lawrence Smith said—"

"You think I'm more lenient than he is?"

The men shuddered and jumped into the water.

Together, they lifted the cage back onto the boat.

Selena lay unconscious inside.

Richard reached through the bars with a trembling hand and held it near her nose.

He sighed with relief. She was still breathing.

His eyes burned with emotion.

"What are you waiting for?" he demanded. "Where's the key? Open this cage!"
