Chapter 70 Max Is Missing

Hearing Selena bring up Brian Layman, James's anger, which had just started to cool down, flared right back up. His voice dripped with dissatisfaction, and his guilt towards Barbara eased a bit.

Selena didn't want to keep arguing with James. "Uncle Brian didn't do anything wrong."

James's face darkened again. He wanted to say something but just pressed his lips together, looking at Selena with disappointment.

Selena got into the car with the agent, ignoring the stare from behind.

The agent, driving up front, noticed Selena's unhappy expression and tried to change the subject. "The houses around here are pretty nice. Everything you need is close by. There's a big underground mall just a three-minute walk away, and the schools from elementary to high school are top-notch. It's also a quiet area. But I do have better listings, though they might be a bit pricier."

Selena didn't have the energy to haggle over the price. She didn't want to compromise on comfort either; if it cost a bit more, so be it.

Finally, the agent took her to a high-end neighborhood.

They called it a wealthy neighborhood because the house prices were sky-high. The location was better, and the facilities were top-notch.

However, every few years, there'd be some scandal about mistresses being caught here.

So, a lot of people thought that while the residents were rich, it wasn't their own money. It was a place where the wealthy kept their mistresses.

Selena didn't care about those rumors. She fell in love with the community at first sight.

The agent introduced, "Ms. Fair, this one is priced at two million dollars. The owner spent a million just on renovations. They're in a hurry to go abroad to take care of their child, so they're selling it at a low price. This is a rare opportunity."

Selena checked out the renovations. It was her favorite style. The house faced the courtyard with a great view. Each floor of the building had two units, with a total of five floors. This unit was on the top floor, and the other side was occupied by another resident, reportedly a young girl.

Selena was really taken with the place. Even though she knew the agent might be exaggerating a bit, she readily paid the deposit. The rest would be settled once Selena's apartment was sold.

The agent said, "Alright, Ms. Fair, once you complete the down payment, I'll hand you the keys."

After signing a quick contract with the agent, Selena headed back to Ashbourne Manor.

As soon as she walked in, she saw Fiona looking anxious, about to head out. Seeing Selena, Fiona's face lit up with hope. "Ms. Fair, Max is missing."

Selena was shocked. "How could Max be missing?"

Fiona looked guilty. "It's all my fault. I was busy tidying up the big room for Max and didn't notice him chasing after your car. I just checked the surveillance and saw he followed you."

Max loved to follow Selena and often chased after her car.

But Selena had been in a rush to meet the agent that morning and hadn't noticed. Now, she felt a wave of regret.

"I'll go out and look for him. Fiona, don't worry. If Max comes back, give me a call."

Fiona was clearly distressed, but given her age, even if she went out, she might not be able to distinguish Max from other dogs.

Selena jumped in her car and retraced her morning route.

Meanwhile, Raymond was discussing a project with John. "Mr. Raymond Montague, this project was personally called in by the government to Mr. William Montague. Because Mr. William Montague served in the military, the government provided this plan. We can modify it at any time, and the government will provide all manpower and resources. If the tourist area can be built, then the Montague Group will have expanded into the tourism business." John followed behind Raymond, speaking respectfully.

Raymond stopped. "Which companies were bidding for this project before?"

John replied, "Stellar Estates Group, Grandeur Estates Enterprises, Elite Realty Ventures. Stellar Estates Group invested two billion dollars, temporarily outbidding Grandeur Estates Enterprises and Elite Realty Ventures."

Raymond asked, "To what extent is the government willing to support?"

John responded, "Officials have pledged to provide land for all future public activity venues built by this company, contingent on the successful completion of the tourist area."

This was a huge benefit. Free land meant saving billions of dollars in costs.

No wonder Stellar Estates Group was willing to bid high for a tourist development project in a small town.

Raymond said, "Come with me to inspect the site tomorrow."

John nodded. Just as he opened the car door for Raymond, a fluffy white figure suddenly appeared, excitedly trying to jump into the car.

John realized it was a dog.

His face changed instantly. Raymond was allergic to dog hair.

Whose dog was this?
