Chapter 71 But This Was Raymond
John was about to shoo the dog away when it started barking like crazy at a couple walking by. They looked like they worked in one of the nearby office buildings.
The couple had a little girl with them, and she was now crying her eyes out because of the barking.
The woman pulled the girl behind her and shot a furious look at Raymond.
"What's wrong with you? Walking your dog without a leash is so irresponsible. What if it bit my kid? Rabies is deadly! If you have a dog, you should leash it."
The woman's husband, though, noticed Raymond's fancy car parked nearby and quickly tried to calm her down.
They didn't want to mess with someone like Raymond.
But the woman, focused on protecting her child, didn't care about Raymond's status. While wiping her daughter's tears, she kept on, "Just because you have money doesn't mean you can be rude!"
Raymond frowned, "This isn't my dog."
Right then, Max started wagging his tail like crazy and circling around him. What a slap in the face.
Raymond's eyes narrowed, and his face darkened.
The woman, still wiping her child's tears, snapped, "You're lying!"
John squatted down to check the dog's tag. "There's a phone number on this tag. It probably just ran out of its home. I'll call the owner."
The woman was taken aback. Seeing they weren't lying, she decided to drop it and left with her still-sniffling child.
John quickly dialed the number on the tag.
Selena had been searching everywhere for Max but hadn't found him. She was starting to worry he might have been taken.
Max had a tag, so if someone found him, they should call her.
Just as she was thinking this, her phone rang with an unfamiliar number.
"Hello," Selena answered, sounding a bit anxious.
John said, "Hi, did you lose a dog? We've got him. Do you know the Montague Group? He's outside their parking garage."
In Silver Bay City, everyone knew the Montague Group.
Selena was puzzled about how Max ended up there. "Okay, thank you. I'll be there in ten minutes. Can you keep an eye on him? I'll compensate you, is that alright?"
John glanced at Raymond, who was staring at Max, lost in thought. Max, being his charming self, sat on the ground, his ears twitching.
Seeing Raymond didn't object, John nodded, "Sure, we'll wait for you for ten minutes."
Selena didn't know who had found her dog, but she knew she had to thank them.
She pulled out $500 from her bag, grabbed an envelope from the glove compartment, stuffed the money inside, and sped off towards the Montague Group.
After hanging up, John pointed to a nearby coffee shop. "Mr. Montague, why don't you sit inside? I'll go buy a leash."
Raymond looked at Max again, feeling a strange sense of familiarity.
But he was allergic to dog hair and didn't want to dig deeper, so he went into the coffee shop, put on his Bluetooth headset, and started an online meeting.
John took Max to a store about 300 feet away, bought a leash, and brought him back.
Even though John wasn't a big dog person, Max was really something—beautiful, well-groomed, and well-behaved.
John didn't want to play with Max in front of Raymond, so he petted him a couple of times outside the coffee shop before leading him inside.
Max seemed to really like Raymond and tried to rush over to him.
When Selena pushed the door open, she immediately saw Raymond sitting by the window.
Raymond's wrist bones were elongated, his brows gently furrowed. Just sitting there, he exuded an elegant grace, marked by sleek and upright lines. His slender hands rested on the keyboard, his downcast gaze infused with a cool, aloof demeanor.
She was puzzled as to why she would run into Raymond here. Looking down, she saw Max lying by his feet.
Raymond's assistant, John, was holding the leash, not letting Max get any closer.
Despite the commotion, Raymond remained composed, continuing his meeting without missing a beat.
Recalling what Catherine had said, Selena quickly walked over.
"Mr. Montague," Selena called out, unsure whether to give the envelope or not.
If it were anyone else, $500 would suffice. But this was Raymond. How much was ten minutes of his time worth?
