Chapter 114 One Lie Led to Another

"Ms. Fair, is something up?" Fiona looked a bit worried and started glancing around.

"Nah, it's just that someone flipped through my book." Selena calmly replied.

Fiona let out a sigh of relief and went back to making soup.

Selena picked up the gift box and peeked inside. There was a bracelet, a really fancy one.

Since it was from William, it had to be pricey.

Out of politeness, Selena grabbed her phone and quickly called William.

As soon as he picked up, she heard him coughing.

"Selena, how's your dad doing?" he asked.

William genuinely cared about Selena, and thinking about how she had lied to him about wanting a baby and secretly signed that deal with Raymond made her feel guilty.

"My dad's much better. Thanks for the gift; it's really generous," Selena said.

"I asked Raymond to visit your dad. Did he go?" William was testing to see if Raymond followed orders.

"Yeah, he did. Everything's fine, no need to worry," she reassured him.

Hearing this, William's eyes lit up, and a smile spread across his face. "Selena, as long as you like it. Wear the bracelet tonight. I want to introduce you to some people so no one disrespects you in the future."

Selena felt a wave of emotion and her eyes got a bit teary. "Okay."

"Selena, you and Raymond need to get along well, alright? I hope you can have a child soon."

"We're trying, but I wasn't very healthy as a kid, so it might take some time."

One lie led to another.

"It's okay, I'm not in a rush. Just keep trying."

Selena exchanged a few more pleasantries before hanging up.

Looking at the bracelet on her wrist, she felt a lot of pressure.

It was probably like the gifts Grace gave, a status symbol.

Selena rubbed her temples and went downstairs to get the dress she would wear tonight. It was a starry night gown, adorned with a few diamonds, clearly very expensive. It seemed James had spent a lot of money for this party.

It fit perfectly. Selena tried it on and then set it aside.

There were still several hours until the banquet, so no need to start getting ready now.

She went downstairs and asked, "Fiona, is Max still locked in the back?"

"Yeah, with Mr. Montague here these past two days, I didn't dare let him out. Luckily, the room is soundproof, or he'd be barking all night."

Selena went to the room where Max was locked. Standing outside, she could hear Max's pitiful barking.

She felt a pang of heartache and thought that once the bank transfer came through, she would move out of Ashbourne Manor as soon as possible. She couldn't let Max suffer because of Raymond.

Sensing Selena's presence, Max got super excited, barking and jumping, wagging his tail like crazy.

Selena opened the door and was immediately pounced on.

Afraid that walking the dog around the villa would leave dog hair, she grabbed the leash and decided to take Max for a walk.

She told Fiona and then walked Max along the path.

Max was a sheepdog, naturally energetic, and Selena had to jog to keep up. Thinking about how he had been cooped up these past two days, she didn't scold him.

After walking a few hundred feet, she heard Max suddenly bark and then dash forward.

Selena couldn't hold on, and her hand hurt from the leash.

"Max!" She scolded, only to see Mia sketching ahead.

This path was good for walking dogs and sketching, with a view of the mountains across the river, a beautiful scene.

Hearing the barking, Mia turned around, and her eyes lit up when she saw Selena holding the leash. "Penny!"

Selena didn't expect to run into Mia here. Given that tonight was her birthday party, Mia should have been preparing early.

"Is this your dog? Penny, what's his name? He's so well-behaved!" Mia got super excited, and Max jumped around her, playing happily.

Selena realized that Max was very friendly towards the Montague Family members.

Mia, full of playful energy, grabbed Max's two legs and jumped a few feet away, then suddenly looked sad. "Max looks a lot like a dog I used to know, even the mark on his forehead. It was a small dog my cousin had, but it was given away."

Selena raised an eyebrow. Wasn't Raymond allergic to dog hair?

Seeing her confusion, Mia quickly explained, "It was my other cousin, Raymond's older brother. He was very gentle and loved that little dog, played with it every day, but it was given away before he could name it."

Raymond had a brother?

Selena was about to ask when Mia changed the subject.

"But don't mention this in front of Raymond. His brother passed away very young, around my age at the time."
