Chapter 218 Wincing in Pain, Yet Calm in the Eyes
The room was super quiet. After Raymond finished talking, he heard Selena say, "Thanks," and it sounded pretty genuine.
Even though he didn't know she was the wife he couldn't stand, he still gave her a good rating.
Their marriage contract was pointless for both of them, more out of necessity than anything else.
The Fair family got the benefits, so she couldn't really expect Raymond to respect her as his wife. She couldn't just take all the perks without giving something up.
Raymond closed his eyes, looking like he needed a break.
Selena got the hint and stayed quiet.
At six in the morning, Raymond heard John's voice.
"Miss, here's your breakfast. Thanks for watching over Mr. Montague all night."
"No need to thank me. Since you're here, I'll head out."
"Alright, I'll thank you properly another day."
The door closed softly, and Raymond finally opened his eyes.
John saw he was awake and looked relieved, quickly setting up a table.
"Sir, want to eat something first?"
Raymond wasn't hungry. He'd had a fever most of the night, and he looked pretty pale and sickly.
"Is the Fair family situation sorted?"
"I've intercepted all their business. James is probably freaking out today. Plus, I've blocked his communication with William. No more calls from that number."
It was a done deal.
Even if something happened to the Fair family, James wouldn't be able to reach William.
And with William's health, he rarely left the Montague estate, so meeting him was out of the question.
This wouldn't bankrupt the Fair family, but it would give James a major headache for at least six months.
After freshening up, Raymond went back to the hotel.
He had no desire to return to Ashbourne Manor.
But Selena was on her way back to Ashbourne Manor.
She had planned to go to Ridgefield today, but after staying up all night with Raymond, she felt dizzy and heavy-headed.
After getting some sleep at Ashbourne Manor, she got a call from Beatrice, saying something had happened to James.
"The Fair family's business has been intercepted. All the partners called your dad. He got so anxious he fainted. He's resting upstairs now. You'd better come back and check on him. Don't say I didn't warn you. I think this is Raymond's doing again. It's your fault for not keeping him happy."
Selena hung up the phone right after hearing that.
But she couldn't avoid going to the Fair family.
James had liver cancer and only a year left. Now, with the company's issues stressing him out, that time might be even shorter.
She went to the Fair family but didn't see any doctors. Beatrice had just helped him upstairs to rest.
When Selena arrived, Beatrice rolled her eyes.
Selena ignored her and went upstairs, finding James awake but looking really rough, coughing non-stop.
Last time, Selena had the hospital hide James's condition, but Beatrice and the others probably knew.
They knew James had liver cancer, yet they didn't get a doctor to check on him.
Selena frowned, feeling uneasy.
James looked terrible. This incident had really shaken him, and he looked gloomy.
"Dad, sell the company's shares to someone else. You can retire and enjoy your later years. This business hiccup won't bankrupt the Fair family. The stock won't tank immediately and will still sell well."
This wasn't the first time Selena had suggested James retire and enjoy his money.
But James never wanted to let the company he built go to someone else.
James frowned, thought for a moment, and sighed. "Is this why you came back? I tried calling William, but I couldn't get through. Selena, can you..."
Before he could finish, Selena stood up.
"I'm heading to Ridgefield later."
Just then, the door opened, and Beatrice's sharp voice cut in.
"Do you even care about your dad, Selena? Are you really his daughter? How can you be so heartless? If Alice had married Raymond, we'd be thriving by now."
Selena sneered. "If Alice really had that ability, she wouldn't have rushed to meet Raymond and been rejected. But in chasing men, she does have your flair, Beatrice."
As soon as she finished, James threw a pillow at her.
The pillow hit Selena's face, making her wince in pain, but her eyes stayed calm.
