Chapter 1419 The Wedding Didn't Take Place
Richard's phone had been ringing incessantly until it finally died. He'd completely forgotten his arrangement with Lawrence and remained seated in the private room closest to the seventh floor.
When Raymond pushed open the door, the smile on his face was almost blinding. Richard immediately understood—Selena must have agreed to keep the baby.
"Absolutely not!" Richard slammed his hand on the table. "She's not even twenty-five! Why should she bear the burden of childbirth for you? Don't push your luck, Raymond. You haven't even married her yet, you once threw her out, you don't have a marriage certificate, and you're still a wanted man. Yet you expect her to have your child? That's completely irresponsible."
Raymond calmly took a seat. "Then why don't you go upstairs and tell Selena she's the long-lost daughter of the Smith family? See if she believes you."
His words left Richard speechless. A cold sensation spread through his limbs, and it took him a long moment to respond.
"Lawrence was wrong, but my father has been searching for her all this time. He even promised to give her all his Smith family shares. I just want her to meet him once."
His voice lacked conviction—he knew Selena likely despised the Smith family.
Raymond poured himself a cup of tea with deliberate slowness. "What does the Smith family plan to do about Lawrence and Tessa?"
The implication was clear: if the resolution wasn't satisfactory, he wouldn't let Selena acknowledge her heritage.
Richard lowered his eyes, his hand clenching and unclenching at his side.
He spoke up, "Father is in a coma now. Once the Smith shares are transferred to Selena, she'll be in charge. If she doesn't want that responsibility, I'll handle it for her and ensure she gets a satisfactory resolution. Raymond, you know my father has been looking for her. He thought she was dead and now he's lying unconscious, with no certainty of when he'll wake up."
Raymond remained silent, fingering the lid of his teacup as he stared into the liquid.
After a moment, Richard added hoarsely, "If something happens to my father, it might become Selena's lifelong regret."
"Tomorrow, I'll bring Selena to the Smith Villa."
Richard's eyes immediately brightened, almost welling with tears.
"Great! I'll sleep here tonight and leave with you both tomorrow!"
"Suit yourself."
Raymond returned to the seventh floor and slipped into bed, holding Selena close.
"What do you think of Richard?" he asked.
"He seems decent enough. He helped me a lot in the beginning. But Lawrence—I never want to see him again in my life."
Raymond pulled her closer, inhaling her scent deeply.
He asked, "Will you come with me to see Mr. Jason Smith tomorrow?"
Worried he might be planning a confrontation, Selena cupped his face in her hands.
"You're not thinking of going to the Smith Villa to confront Lawrence, are you? Don't be foolish. No matter what Lawrence has done, to Mr. Jason Smith, he's still his son. He won't take our side—we're outsiders. And the Smith Villa is their territory. If conflict erupts, we'll have nowhere to run."
Raymond chuckled softly, holding her even tighter. "Trust me. I won't let anything happen to you or our baby."
At the mention of their child, Selena felt a warm glow spread through her.
"Raymond, do you think it's a boy or a girl?"
Without hesitation, he replied, "A girl, I hope. I want her to be just like you."
Selena fell silent, overcome with exhaustion. She nestled against him and drifted off to sleep.
Raymond gazed down at her face, gently kissing her forehead before contentedly holding her as he too fell asleep.
Meanwhile, at the Smith Villa, Lawrence had been waiting for hours with no sign of Richard. His calls went unanswered until Richard's phone eventually shut off completely.
Looking at the comatose figure on the bed, Lawrence couldn't bring himself to be angry. Just a month ago, Jason had seemed full of life, but now it was as if someone had drained the very spirit out of him.
Lawrence felt a pang of guilt, made worse when Tessa chose that moment to call.
