Chapter 1534 He Should Have Found Mario
That evening, her stomach had already been bothering her, prompting Richard to call a doctor who examined her briefly.
When she awoke, her complexion was noticeably paler.
No wonder 00's sudden appearance had felt so jarring—Raymond had been keeping secrets from her all along.
She drew a deep breath and looked at Richard, who sat beside her bed. "Richard, have the international team really not found the research facility's location yet?"
Richard frowned and shook his head.
Selena fell silent. If even the international team couldn't locate it, how had Raymond obtained this information? He'd already flown to Vesperia, seemingly certain the research facility was there.
She rubbed her temples, her thoughts a tangled mess.
Suddenly, she recalled something from the underground fighting ring—a man mentioning two test subjects. One was Mario, but could the other be Raymond? Yet Raymond had only had a decade of memories copied; surely they hadn't experimented on him further.
A wave of unease washed over her.
"Richard, Raymond left for Vesperia," she said. "He took a body double of me—one that's ninety percent identical to me."
Richard placed his hand on her forehead. "Selena, are you running a fever?"
Only then did she realize her entire body was burning up, but her concern for Raymond remained. "Richard, if you manage to contact him, tell me immediately."
Richard nodded and had the doctor administer an injection.
Selena quickly drifted off to sleep.
Richard wiped the sweat from her forehead with a tissue before calling Lawrence.
"Lawrence, I hear Raymond's headed to Vesperia. Is that where the research facility is?"
Lawrence was still investigating the matter with Clifton, who had just received crucial intelligence two minutes earlier.
The research facility was indeed in Vesperia, but recent international news broadcasts had been warning people to avoid the region. A terrifying epidemic had broken out and evacuations were already underway.
If the research facility had released information now, it was clearly intended to lure people in.
Given Raymond's intelligence, he wouldn't walk into such an obvious trap unless he possessed vital information—information he hadn't shared with anyone.
Lawrence's brow furrowed. "How is she doing?"
Raymond clearly hadn't taken Selena to Vesperia. A pregnant woman had no business in a disease-ravaged area.
"Selena's emotionally unstable," Richard replied. "Apparently Raymond prepared a body double that's ninety percent identical to her. He's quite the maverick, isn't he? Leaving without telling any of us. I wonder what he knows that we don't."
Clifton sat down nearby, contemplative. "He must have found Mario."
Mario was the only one who could provide leads now. Octavia was beyond communication with anyone.
Mario was the key—Raymond had likely learned something from him.
Lawrence ended the call with Richard and drummed his fingers lightly on the table. "If it were reliable intelligence, Raymond wouldn't keep it to himself. He's either uncertain about its validity and taking a calculated risk, or the information concerns him personally and he's uncomfortable sharing it."
Clifton chuckled. "You seem to have a lot of faith in your future brother-in-law."
Lawrence lowered his eyes, his voice tinged with melancholy. "I just think Selena's judgment of character is better than mine."
Her unwavering devotion to Raymond suggested he was truly worthy of her lifelong commitment.
Lawrence made another call and quickly obtained Raymond's landing location.
"Shall we go?" he asked.
He and Clifton were close, and the Farley family once included a medical genius who had mysteriously disappeared years ago, leaving only a letter behind. Clifton's investigation into the research facility was partly motivated by the possibility that this relative had been taken there.
The two moved quickly, arranging a private jet.
Before departing, Lawrence couldn't resist calling Richard again, instructing him to take good care of Selena.
Richard could tell from his tone that their mission was extremely dangerous.
"Lawrence, I'll leave some of the Smith family here to look after her. Let me come with you," Richard offered.
International media had been reporting the severe epidemic in the Congo. What if they contracted this virus with its hundred percent mortality rate? Even developed nations had issued evacuation orders, indicating no treatment existed.
"Richard, stay home and take care of her," Lawrence replied. "Keep her emotions stable and ensure the baby's health."
Richard knew Lawrence felt guilty and wanted to make amends by helping Selena. "I understand, Lawrence."
"And regarding mother's situation—the engineering team is working hard. The mastermind is likely monitoring us and may taunt you at any moment. If you hear anything, let me know immediately."
"Will do."
After hanging up, Richard called the engineering team at Mystic Prison, eager to learn when they might breach the underground chamber's defenses.
