Chapter 39
The Montague Group Top Floor
Raymond sat behind his desk, looking pretty ticked off.
He'd taken a break at noon to head back to Montague Manor, only to find out his nominal wife had the nerve to skip the appointment.
His already low opinion of her just hit rock bottom.
The office door swung open, and John walked in with a stack of papers. "Mr. Raymond Montague, the doctor from abroad called. They said Mr. William Montague is already handling the paperwork and should be back in about a week."
Raymond rubbed his temples. After a long pause, he looked up slightly. "Have Eric draft a new contract. The Montague Group is willing to help the Fair Group through the second round of financing, on the condition that this so-called wife of mine plays along with me."
Raymond's tone was cold. He referred to her this way because he didn't even know Selena's name.
John nodded and went off to make the arrangements.
Lawyer Eric Hill whipped up the contract in no time. In less than half an hour, it was on Raymond's desk for approval.
Once Raymond gave the green light, the contract was printed, and he signed it.
In just forty minutes, Eric was on his way to Selena's apartment with the contract.
Selena had just gotten back from the studio and was stressing about how to explain to Raymond why she missed the appointment. If he got mad and took it out on the Fair family, she might not be able to meet James's expectations.
Should she text him or call to apologize?
As she was debating, the doorbell rang.
Opening the door, Selena saw Eric standing there in a suit.
"Ms. Fair, this is the contract Mr. Montague asked me to deliver. He's already signed it. You can take a look," Eric said.
Selena instinctively thought it was a divorce agreement. But when she looked, she realized it wasn't.
'Assist the Fair Group through their second round of financing? Pretend to be in a loving relationship with Raymond?' It was perfect for her plans.
Selena let out a sigh of relief, a slight smile forming on her lips. She glanced down and saw Raymond's signature.
The handwriting was deep, like he was reluctant to sign.
Selena frowned. She grabbed a pen from the entryway and was about to sign her name but paused, looking up slightly. "It doesn't specify a time limit?"
Whether it was one year, two years, or five years, she could handle it.
But if Raymond wanted her to act for ten or twenty years, she'd be stuck in this marriage forever.
"Mr. William Montague is about to return to the country. Mr. Raymond Montague doesn't want to aggravate his condition. Once Mr. William Montague recovers, you will divorce. If additional compensation is needed at that time..." Eric explained in detail.
"No need," Selena responded quickly.
Selena was eager for this and immediately signed her name without any hesitation.
Eric was a bit surprised, thinking she hadn't read the terms carefully, so he reminded her solemnly.
"Ms. Fair, the contract also states that once this contract is terminated, it will be your divorce. Do you need an additional agreement? Mr. Montague can compensate you."
Eric thought, 'How can she be so calm about divorcing a guy like Raymond? She must be pretending and trying to win Raymond's favor through this tactic.'
Selena handed the contract back. "I'm already very satisfied with this. The day the contract ends is the day I divorce him."
Eric stood there, stunned for a moment, then adjusted his glasses. "Ms. Fair, why don't you make some demands?"
Such a rare opportunity, and she seemed completely oblivious.
Since Raymond had promised conditions, as long as they weren't excessive, he would surely meet them.
Selena shook her head and pointed to her computer on the table. "I have work to do, so I won't keep you."
Eric felt quite awkward, as if he were the one begging her to make demands. He quickly nodded. "Alright, Ms. Fair."
Walking out of the apartment building, Eric was still puzzled as he had prepared several arguments in case Selena tried to take advantage of the situation.
Raymond had thought the same.
Who knew Selena had no intention of holding on, even seeming eager.
Could it be that she was the one who wanted the divorce more?
