Chapter 1358 I Won't Let Anything Happen to You

Lawrence refused to meet Victor, choosing instead to stay with Cora and tend to Tessa's needs.

Jason, however, had already left. He drove himself, determined to discover what Victor truly wanted.

Just minutes after setting out, he received a call from Raymond.

"Mr. Smith, I'd advise against meeting with Victor right now. I'm still gathering evidence."

"But I met with him just hours ago. He merely apologized for finding no trace of my daughter. Now he suddenly calls claiming he has information. I want to see what this is about."

Raymond's brow furrowed. At this point, he only had suspicions—no concrete evidence. Yet if Victor was the prime suspect, everything would make sense.

Victor had to be the one.

If it was truly him, the depth of his backing would be unfathomable.

"Mr. Smith, you mentioned an important figure in BK has a tiny red birthmark near his earlobe. During your meeting with Victor, did you notice anything?"

"I looked. He doesn't have that birthmark."

Raymond fell silent. How could that be? Had Victor somehow concealed it?

"Raymond, are you suspecting Dr. Barnes? Honestly, he was once my personal physician. If he had ulterior motives, I should have noticed. But he's typically reserved, with a gentle demeanor."

The problem was that everyone trusted Victor.

Alex and Jason trusted him. Victor had countless opportunities to eliminate either of them but never did.

Yet Raymond chose to trust his instincts.

These coincidences seemed too convenient. Victor remained his prime suspect.

"Mr. Smith, proceed with the meeting if you must, but be careful. I'm on my way back to Vistalia with some useful leads. Victor remains my number one suspect."

After hanging up, Jason continued driving, now with heightened awareness thanks to Raymond's warning.

Meanwhile, Victor was also driving. As they rounded a bend, they nearly collided with an oncoming car.

He jerked the steering wheel violently, causing their vehicle to crash through the guardrail and plunge into the lake.

Victor called out, "Selena, hold your breath!"

The car then hit the water with a splash.

Selena felt the bone-chilling cold as she opened her eyes to see Victor freeing her from entangling water weeds.

Unable to breathe, she pushed him away, urging him to save himself.

Victor ignored her, continuing to work on the weeds.

For a moment, she thought she might die, not wanting to take him down with her.

Just as oxygen deprivation threatened to claim her, the weeds loosened. Someone grabbed her hand, pulling her toward the surface.

Breaking through, she gasped desperately for air.

Above them on the bridge, another vehicle had crashed and burst into flames.

Victor's eyes flashed with recognition as he pulled her toward a different direction.

"Come, it's not safe here."

"Dr. Barnes, was it the Smith family?"

"Very likely. Lawrence probably doesn't want the real Smith daughter to return."

Selena felt a chill in her heart. "So to protect Tessa, he'd kill his own sister?"

"Selena, blood isn't always thicker than water. Tessa has been his focus for over twenty years—he's accustomed to protecting and indulging her. A stranger suddenly appearing would disrupt that. Tessa's tears could drive him to do anything."

As Selena began to respond, a bullet hit the water beside them.

Victor pulled her close, his voice grave. "Careful."

"Dr. Barnes!" Selena exclaimed.

The next moment, a bullet struck his shoulder, blood streaming into the lake water.

He positioned himself protectively in front of her. "I won't let anything happen to you. Follow me."
