Chapter 393 Raymond Hates Being Interfered with
Selena let out a big sigh of relief, her eyes finally showing some ease.
'Well, at least that's over,' she thought.
Right then, James called her, "Selena!"
He was so overwhelmed he couldn't get another word out, his vision going dark.
"Dad, it's all good now. Just rest."
James tried to speak, but all he felt was bitterness.
After a moment, he managed to ask, "Was it Raymond?"
"Yeah."
James went quiet. He always thought Raymond didn't care about Selena. But here he was, not only intercepting the Fair family's business but also saving them from bankruptcy.
"Alright, alright, I need to thank William personally."
Selena frowned. "Dad, don't do anything unnecessary. Raymond stepped in because you were too close to William. Remember when William tried to tie him down with marriage? Raymond left everyone and went abroad for three years. He hates being controlled. If the Fair family wants to survive, just stay out of his way."
James wiped his tears, still in shock from the Fair family being saved.
Hearing Selena's words, his chest felt both painful and numb.
"I get it, Selena. But still, you need to take over the company."
Selena, an interior designer, was already juggling clients and the renovation market. She had worked her way up from the bottom.
James, despite his occasional confusion, never wavered in his intention to hand the company over to Selena. Even though Nick had won his favor, he only considered giving him shares of the Fair family business.
Selena fell silent; she didn't want to take over. Once she finished the design for Manston Manor, she planned to hand Carter's projects to others in the studio and restart her painting career. Otherwise, she couldn't explain it to Steve when he returned.
Her next goal was to rent a studio and compete in international painting competitions.
James coughed twice, aware of her difficult position.
"My body can hold on for at most two years. After that, it has to be you."
Selena was speechless because even with good care, James could only last a year.
And now, he was suffering from the double blow of the company's crisis and Beatrice's betrayal, turning his hair grey overnight.
He probably couldn't even last a year.
Selena felt a weariness creeping from her bones, leaving her at a loss.
If it were Barbara, she would probably want her to do what she loved.
Back in Silver Bay City Art Academy, she was suppressed to the point of having no choice but to switch to interior design.
James waited for her answer, coughing even more severely.
Seeing the blood on the blanket, his pupils contracted slightly.
Selena's voice came to his ears.
"Dad, let me think about it."
James didn't speak, just stared blankly at the bloodstains on the blanket.
A nurse came in to change his medication and, seeing the bloodstains, quickly brought a new blanket.
"Mr. Fair, please avoid getting too emotional."
James sat on the bed, his lips still stained with traces of blood.
Could he not even last two years?
Selena absolutely couldn't divorce Raymond; otherwise, who would support her?
After hanging up the phone, Selena fell into an exhausted sleep.
She slept until evening, feeling her energy slowly return.
Rubbing her eyes, she washed her face to wake up. Hearing her phone ringing, she tensed up.
Seeing it wasn't from Raymond, she sighed heavily in relief.
If Raymond called her over again tonight, she would really die in his room.
The message was from Steve.
Selena quickly called him back.
"Sir."She called out, and a hearty laugh came from the other end.
Steve said, "I heard from William that you married his grandson? He sure knows how to take advantage. I was thinking of introducing you to a better man. Raymond was far less mature than Christopher back then. I wanted to introduce you to Christopher, but who knew."
Steve was the most artist-like artist Selena had ever met. Every one of his paintings sold for astronomical prices.
This month he might be in one country, and the next month in another, always on the move, searching for inspiration.
"Penny, I'm selling a painting soon. See if you like it. If you do, I'll give it to you as a wedding gift."
Steve's paintings were worth millions of dollars at the very least.
When Steve first saw Selena's painting, he called her Penny.
That was back when Selena was in Ridgefield. Steve, a wanderer who traveled everywhere, happened to see her sketching.
He immediately wanted to take her as a student.
