Chapter 377 Actually, She Is My Wife

Selena hit the underground garage and was just about to hop into her car when she noticed the window of the car next to hers was down. Bert's pudgy face popped out.

He didn't even bother hiding his intentions and whipped out a card. "$1.4 million for a hundred times. If you're game, get in."

His face was so fat it barely fit through the window.

Selena felt a wave of nausea at his words.

Bert, on the other hand, looked smug and confident. "Kross told me about you, said you were a real looker. I saw your pic back then, but damn, you're even hotter in person. You were probably a virgin then, but who knows now. Virgins fetch top dollar. I'm offering $14,000 a pop, which is pretty generous. After that, I'll get you a villa. The Fair Group's going under in a month. If you don't agree, I'll made sure you'll be begging on the streets, sweetheart."

That last line was beyond gross!

Most rich, middle-aged guys had this insane confidence.

They thought flashing a card would make women fall at their feet.

In the business world, women were often seen as way below men.

A lot of folks used beautiful women to butter up CEOs, and over time, these guys got more and more arrogant.

Selena grabbed the card and chucked it right at Bert's face. "Bert, keep it. Even if Apex Holdings Group goes under, the Fair family won't."

With that, she jumped in her car and floored it.

Bert's face stung from the card, and he was in total shock. No woman had ever dared to treat him like that.

He thought, 'Damn it! This chick's got guts!'

He slammed his fist on the front seat, scaring the driver.

"Mr. Thompson."

Bert sneered. "I want this bitch to pay for pissing me off."

The driver stayed quiet. Others had turned Bert down before, but they did it politely, scared of what he'd do.

But Selena had the nerve to throw the card in his face. She must have a death wish.

"Drive!"

"Oh, okay."

Bert was still fuming. Even when he met with a bunch of company presidents at the karaoke bar that night, he couldn't shake it off.

When Kross had shown off that photo back then, Bert had been drooling over her.

He also mentioned that Selena had another name, Penny, and was into painting.

Bert shoved away the woman clinging to him.

The ladies in the private room were all pretty hot, but none of them held a candle to Selena.

He snorted and stepped out for a smoke.

As he walked through the lobby, he spotted a guy helping out another dude who was a bit tipsy.

The drunk guy was pretty unremarkable.

The sober guy was bragging to his buddy.

"I got promoted thanks to Penny. Bet you didn't know she's actually my wife. No one else does, either."

His buddy just laughed it off, thinking he was talking nonsense because he was drunk.

After all, Penny was someone even Alan had to handle with care. How could she be married to a nobody like Lucas?

But Bert's ears perked up.

A sinister glint flashed in his eyes.

On his way back from the restroom, a bunch of bodyguards grabbed Lucas and dragged him away, giving him a good beating.

Lucas kept begging for mercy, clueless about who was behind it.

When they finally yanked the sack off his head, he squinted through his swollen eyes and saw the middle-aged man sitting in front of him.

The middle aged man quetioned savagely, "You said Penny is your wife?"

Lucas trembled, too scared to answer.

He had just been bragging, but now he was in deep trouble.

He couldn't afford to piss off this guy, and he definitely couldn't afford to piss off Penny.

Bert sneered and lit a cigar. "Call her and tell her to come get you."

Even though Lucas was a coward, he surprisingly held his ground and didn't call Selena.

The bodyguards stepped in and beat him up again.

When Selena got back to the Fair family villa, she was shocked to see James already there.

She thought she was seeing things.

In front of James was a stack of documents, and his hair was all grey. He must have just woken up.

He hadn't told Selena and had somehow managed to discharge himself from the hospital.

The hospital had tried to keep him, but they hadn't told him about his terminal liver cancer.

James looked like he'd aged ten years, and his vision had gotten so bad in just a few days that he now needed glasses to read the contracts.

Seeing him like this, Selena felt a pang of sadness.

James coughed every few lines as he read, clearly struggling.

He was going over the contract between the company and Apex Holdings Group, trying to find any loopholes.

But after reading it ten times, it was clear that the company was already drowning in debt.
