Chapter 43
Sofia never thought she'd bump into Selena here, and man, was she fuming.
Earlier, Sofia had totally embarrassed herself in front of Raymond. She had been plotting to win back his favor, but before she could make a move, she ran into Selena again.
Selena just brushed her off and turned to Raymond, all polite. "Mr. Montague, could you spot me some chips? I'll pay you back double later."
The crowd was shocked. All night, women had been trying to get on Raymond's good side, but he hadn't given anyone the time of day.
Now, Selena was chatting him up right in front of everyone.
If she were single, it'd be clear she was trying to butter him up. But she claimed to be married and was still asking Raymond for money.
What a dumb way to get attention.
Raymond didn't see Selena coming. Before he could say anything, Alex, sitting next to him, slid half his chips her way. He kept a gentle smile, but there was a hint of mockery in his eyes.
He thought, just like everyone else, that Selena's move to get Raymond's attention was tacky and annoying.
"Sounds like a good deal. Ms. Cooper, you don't mind borrowing it from me, do you?" Alex cut in.
Selena had planned to ask Raymond because she didn't know anyone else at the table and was thinking about future deals with him.
But since Alex offered, she took it graciously, "Thanks."
Alex didn't even look at her, just gave a faint smile.
Everyone could tell Alex didn't want her using this as a chance to bug Raymond.
Selena didn't care. She took the chips and looked at the dealer.
The dealer quickly put on a professional smile, "Since everyone's ready, let's start the game..."
"Hold up." Just as the dealer was about to deal, Joseph interrupted, "How about we play no-limit tonight?"
This was a Texas Hold'em table, and no-limit means you can bet as much as you want. You could lose everything or get super rich in one night.
Someone had played no-limit here before, lost ten billion dollars, and reportedly jumped into the river afterward. The body was never found.
As the heir to Citibank, Joseph was loaded, and everyone else at the table, except Selena, were top-tier billionaires who could afford to play.
All eyes turned to Selena, basically telling her to leave.
Joseph grinned, ready to humiliate her, "Penny, you've never played no-limit, have you?"
Selena stayed calm and asked seriously, "What's no-limit?"
Joseph's face fell. He thought Selena didn't even know what no-limit was.
He gritted his teeth, feeling like a fool.
"Losing has no limits here; our bets start in the millions. Can you afford to lose that much?" Joseph asked.
Selena looked at the chips in her hand and asked, "How much are these worth?"
Joseph couldn't hold back, "Haven't you been here before? How could you not know the value of the chips?"
Selena blinked innocently. "I've never been here."
Even if she had, she wouldn't admit it.
Not just Joseph, but everyone else was exasperated.
Was she a total newbie?
The chips in front of her were worth a billion dollars. No wonder she took them; she didn't even know their value!
How clueless!
Everyone at the table went silent, and the onlookers were dead quiet.
In this tense moment, Raymond let out a light laugh, his eyes twinkling with amusement.
It was his first laugh of the night.
