Chapter 1430 Time, After All, Is Fair
After hanging up, Lawrence immediately informed Richard about Tessa's confession.
Richard was furious, practically ready to grab a gun and empty the magazine into Tessa. Lawrence, however, rubbed his temples wearily.
"This 'mysterious organization' she mentioned—Raymond might know something about it. Richard, go ask him."
Lawrence couldn't bring himself to face either Selena or Raymond right now. He wanted nothing more than to disappear somewhere, but Jason's condition was his responsibility. As a son, he had to shoulder this burden.
Yet his mind was troubled. That photograph he'd seen in Jason's room continued to haunt him. He couldn't shake the feeling that the woman in the picture wasn't Cora. If not her, it could only be Octavia. Combined with Jason occasionally murmuring "Octavia" during his unconscious state, could it mean his father had never truly loved his mother?
The thought left a bitter taste in Lawrence's mouth. As Cora's son, this revelation brought him no comfort. While Cora had hardly been an exemplary mother—living without dignity in Jason's presence and maintaining a quiet existence—she had always managed the Smith family's domestic affairs impeccably.
Lawrence sighed softly before giving Richard further instructions.
"Find out if there's an antidote and whether the poisoning story is true."
Richard wasted no time calling Raymond.
Raymond was in the kitchen supervising breakfast preparation. He'd hired a personal chef to create a specialized pregnancy diet for Selena and was currently memorizing the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy while observing the chef's techniques.
When his phone rang, his first instinct was to ignore it. He didn't want anything disrupting his private world with Selena. But he knew they would be leaving soon and needed to resolve any Smith family matters quickly.
"Raymond," Richard's voice came through as soon as he answered, "Tessa just confessed to poisoning my father. Hospital equipment can't detect it. She claims it came from some mysterious organization. Do you know anything about this?"
At the same moment Raymond took the call, Selena received a text message from K.
K: [Congratulations on your family reunion. Though Jason will likely remain a vegetable for the rest of his life.]
The message was repulsive.
Selena replied coldly: [You seem to know everything, don't you?]
K didn't respond directly but sent a photo of an office with documents spread across a desk—implying that nothing escaped his knowledge, including her identity.
Selena felt irritated. This person was incredibly arrogant yet cautious.
K texted: [How did you break free from my hypnosis? Raymond surely wouldn't let you risk your life. I'm curious.]
Reading this, Selena realized K was someone who completely failed to understand human emotions.
Instead of answering his question, she texted: [Did you provide the drug used on Mr. Smith?]
K: [Yes. Selena, you're welcome to come find me.]
Her expression darkened. If K had supplied the poison, this situation was far more complicated than she'd thought.
She immediately went to Raymond, who had just finished telling her about Richard's call.
"It's K who provided the drug," she said, her heart sinking. "It likely came from the research facility. Raymond, I've been wondering about the connection between the research facility and BK. Many of K's drugs are linked to the facility, and didn't we hear that even there, these substances aren't accessible to ordinary people?"
She took a deep breath. "I need to save Mr. Smith."
They needed to leave immediately for the address to find Barbara, who might have crucial information about BK.
Raymond glanced down at her stomach, hesitation evident on his face.
Selena understood his concern. With her pregnancy, venturing into unknown territory could be dangerous.
She moved closer, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Whatever comes, we'll face it together, okay?"
He couldn't resist, embracing her waist. "Okay."
Having decided to depart, Selena and Raymond made one more visit to the Smith Villa.
Jason remained unconscious with no signs of waking. The doctors had examined him again but could offer no diagnosis beyond stress-induced collapse.
Richard sat nearby, his expression grim. "Tessa claims she can get the antidote. Do you think she's telling the truth?"
"K won't surrender the antidote easily," Selena replied immediately. "Tessa is just a pawn to him, like Layla who died. He never cares about his pawns' lives. Tessa is probably just saying this to save herself."
She looked at the man lying on the bed, her voice detached. "I'm going to find Barbara. It will involve the BK organization and eventually the research facility. I'll bring back the antidote for him."
She still couldn't bring herself to call Jason "father."
At that moment, the man lying weak and dying in bed opened his eyes again at that moment, but the once-clear gaze had turned cloudy. He gazed quietly at Selena, struggling to lift his hand, but could only manage to twitch his fingertips before his strength failed him.
Selena had once watched Jason give a speech—impeccably dressed in a business suit, his gaze powerful and penetrating. She'd always thought time had been kind to this accomplished man—he hardly seemed to age.
But seeing him now, frail and powerless in bed, she realized time was fair to everyone, after all.
She reached out and gently took his hand in hers.
