Chapter 76 Raymond Smokes
The room went dead silent.
Raymond, who had been rubbing his forehead, stopped and glanced up at Selena.
Selena, sensing the awkwardness of being alone with a guy, smiled and said, "I was just saying."
Raymond stared at her, wondering if her husband knew how flirty she was being.
He looked down and said coldly, "Get out."
Selena figured Raymond just didn't like chatting with women and wanted to stay loyal to Olivia.
She added, "I didn't mean anything by it, Mr. Montague. Get some rest."
She really had no hidden agenda. Raymond was her client, and she just wanted to help him out since he was drunk, hoping to get on his good side.
Raymond hadn't said a word about the design plan yet, which made Selena a bit uneasy, even though she was usually confident in her work.
Back in her room, Selena changed clothes and scrubbed the paint-stained shirt in a basin. After rinsing it a couple of times, she hung it by the window to dry.
She then went back to clean her brushes and palette, mixing new colors.
Returning to the white wall, she continued painting. Inspiration was fleeting, and she didn't want to lose it after a night's sleep.
Selena painted diligently. The night light on her right attracted a few moths, and everything else was quiet.
By three in the morning, feeling sleepy, she decided to wash her face to wake up.
As she passed the round arch near the washbasin, she saw Raymond leaning against a column in the courtyard, smoking a cigarette. He looked both lazy and intimidating.
Selena couldn't remember if she'd ever seen Raymond smoke, but the scene, with the moonlight and the courtyard, was so beautiful she didn't want to disturb it.
Raymond flicked his cigarette ash and glanced at the rock garden and flowing water.
He'd always been disciplined, but tonight he couldn't sleep.
Hearing footsteps, he looked over and saw a figure disappearing around the corner.
Raymond frowned, put out his cigarette, and walked over.
Selena had returned to the white wall. The noise from the faucet was enough to disturb Raymond. She had hoped the cold water would wake her up, but now she was wide awake.
She smiled and painted even faster.
Half an hour later, just as she put the brush back, she heard a voice next to her ear. "Did they hire you?"
Selena jumped, her heart racing. She turned and saw Raymond standing less than three feet away.
"Mr. Montague, you scared me."
Raymond, smelling faintly of smoke and the night air, didn't come closer but looked at her painting with a hint of admiration.
He'd never seen her paint before, only her designs. He hadn't expected her to be so talented.
Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "With skills like that, why didn't you keep painting after graduation?"
Selena paused, mixing paint. "Mr. Montague, didn't you hear it last time?"
"That's it?" Raymond asked, surprised.
His casual words felt like a needle, not painful but impossible to ignore.
Raymond had always had it easy. He couldn't understand how terrifying it was for an ordinary person to be slandered and discriminated against.
"Yeah, that's it," Selena replied.
She turned her back to him and continued painting, a hint of dissatisfaction in her tone.
Raymond stood behind her, his gaze inevitably drifting to her waist.
