Chapter 122 Turn Into Enemies Overnight

Jacob, all worked up, couldn't keep his voice down, so it bounced off the hallway walls.

If he'd just spoken clearly, Raymond would've caught on to their argument and figured out who Selena was, especially since Jacob had already yelled her name.

But Jacob was too riled up, making his words a jumbled mess.

So, Raymond was clueless about their fight; he could only catch bits and pieces of what Selena was saying.

And Jacob's words were just a jumbled mess.

Outside the hallway, Selena paused, almost laughing out of sheer frustration.

"If it weren't for Brian and Erin, do you think I'd even bother with you?" she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Jacob, a twenty-eight-year-old guy, still hadn't landed a real job, had swiped hundreds of thousands from clients, lost over a million gambling, and left Brian and Erin to deal with his loan sharks. How did he have the nerve to yell here?

Selena grabbed him and answered the call, "Brian."

But it wasn't Brian; it was her aunt, Erin.

Erin's voice was tired and raspy. "Selena, I didn't want to call, but I have no choice. We don't have Mr. Montague's contact info, and the police won't release Megan. We can't come up with that kind of money. The area's about to be redeveloped, and Brian and I borrowed from relatives to buy a few houses from neighbors, thinking we could pay off part of the debt. But now that the redevelopment news is out, their kids are causing trouble. Brian's leg is broken, his head's bleeding. He's still in the hospital, and I can't cover the surgery costs. All our money was with Megan, and now she's in jail. I don't have anyone else to turn to. I'm really out of options."

Hearing this, Selena's heart tightened with a mix of anger and helplessness.

She thought Brian and Erin would let Megan sit in jail for a bit. After a month, Selena would figure out a way to get her out.

Megan's mouth was too reckless, and a month in jail would be a small lesson.

But she hadn't expected Brian and Erin to be so desperate to keep Megan from suffering, even buying other people's houses.

They'd lived in the Harmony District for years and knew the neighbors well. Knowing the area was about to be redeveloped, they bought the houses early. Now that the news was out, and it was just days after the sale, how could the previous owners be okay with it?

Even among relatives, money matters were clear-cut. Decades-long neighbors had turned into enemies overnight.

Brian and Erin dared to pull such a stunt.

Selena felt a wave of helplessness and could only offer comfort. "Erin, don't worry. I'll send you money right away. Use it for the medical bills. I'll come back tonight."

Selena then turned to Jacob, "Come on, you're coming back with me tonight."

Jacob threatened, "Selena, I'm not going back. If you want to go, go by yourself. I never want to go back to that house."

As soon as he finished, Selena slapped him hard.

Jacob's head snapped to the side, and his mouth filled with the taste of blood.

He looked at Selena in disbelief, and after a few seconds, touched his cheek.

"You hit me?" His voice was a mix of shock and hurt.

When Selena had stayed at Brian's house, she had been a quiet and calm girl. Who would've thought she'd slap him?

Jacob didn't think of hitting back; after all, Selena was his cousin, and hitting a woman would be disgraceful.

His eyes reddened as he touched his face.

Selena looked at him coldly, saying, "Have you sobered up? Megan is the one you want to marry. She deliberately damaged Mr. Montague's car and owes eight million dollars in compensation. Brian and Erin took a huge risk for that money, and now Brian is in critical condition. Are you really not going back? Jacob, if you don't go back, I'll have those thugs come and beat you to death right now."

Jacob's body trembled, and he pursed his lips in a cowardly manner.

Raymond watched the whole scene unfold.

When he saw Selena slap Jacob, he raised an eyebrow slightly.
