Chapter 153 I'll be back soon, Raymond
Raymond, almost cold and logical, tried to comfort himself and quickly looked away.
Once inside the hospital, Selena couldn't hold on any longer. She leaned against the wall, gasping for breath.
The meds were still messing with her, and her cheek was throbbing from the slap.
One side of her face hurt, the other felt hot. She was dizzy.
Luckily, a nurse passing by helped her into a room.
Thinking about everything that happened that night made Selena feel sick.
And she did throw up, her face pale as she accepted the doctor's orders for an IV.
Right then, James texted her, reminding her not to forget to bring Raymond back.
James: [Selena, you and Raymond are married; you have to bring him to The Fair Villa at least once.]
Selena immediately figured out that the Fair family needed Raymond to stabilize things and squash the rumors.
The Fair family had just finished a second round of financing, and their network was growing.
A lot of people, seeing the Fair family’s connection with the Montague family, would give the Fair family shortcuts, basically showing respect to Raymond and the Montague family.
But in this world, no one did favors for free; if they showed respect, they expected something in return.
If the Fair family and the Montague family had a bad relationship, the Fair family's return would be minimal, and no one would care. So the Fair family had to prove that Raymond valued this marriage.
Only then would those who gave face continue to do so.
Selena sat alone in the hospital, feeling a chilling cold in her heart.
But James didn't stop at one message; he sent another: [I shouldn't have argued with you so many times, but you have to believe, it's all for your own good.]
Selena tugged at the corner of her mouth.
But after Barbara passed away, James took care of everything for her, and she had seen firsthand how hard James worked to make money.
Selena couldn't ignore James, especially since he only had a year left.
This thought made Selena feel upset.
She didn't reply to that message, but saw his last one: [If you have Raymond to rely on, your future will be much easier. Even if I'm not around one day, I can rest easy.]
Selena had to reply to this one: [Dad, I know.]
Because James didn't have much time left, Selena couldn't stand him saying things like that.
On such a hot and humid night, she stayed alone in the hospital, looking at the dark night outside the window, listening to the occasional cough from patients in the hallway, feeling an overwhelming sense of loneliness and solitude.
Selena lowered her eyelashes, a hint of bitterness on her lips.
Her phone buzzed, and she thought it was another message from James. Suppressing her turbulent emotions, she opened it and saw it was from Raymond: [You don't need to repay the money.]
The tone was cold, and through the screen, it felt even colder.
But thinking of how Raymond had saved her twice, Selena felt a miraculous warmth in her heart.
Selena replied: [Thank you.]
Raymond looked at the polite message, intending to ask how she was doing now.
But as his fingers tapped the screen, he realized what he was doing, froze, and then threw the phone aside, frowning.
This was not a good start; he hated this feeling.
The discarded phone rang, and seeing the flashing name, the rising emotion instantly vanished.
"Olivia," he pressed the answer button and called out.
A gentle female voice came from the other end, "Am I disturbing your rest?"
"No." Raymond was always a man of few words. After speaking, there was only silence.
But Olivia was good at finding topics, sharing her recent experiences, and then, with a smile, she said what she most wanted to say tonight. "I'll be back soon, Raymond."
