Chapter 1416 He Just Feels Unable to Face Selena
The room grew quieter. Richard desperately wanted to tell Selena the truth about her identity, but he couldn't bring himself to face his sister—especially with that vivid handprint still marking her cheek.
"Selena, who hit you?" Richard asked.
If it was one of those security guards, he'd deal with them personally.
Selena touched her swollen cheek, her tone bitter. "You should ask Lawrence about that."
Those words hit Richard like a barrage of slaps across his own face. Heat flooded his body as heartbreak and shame warred inside him. Lawrence had done this? Lawrence, who never raised a hand to women.
His fingers trembled as they gently touched her cheek, and tears suddenly streamed down his face.
Selena froze, stunned. She'd never seen Richard cry before. What could possibly make him break down like this?
Richard knew his reaction was excessive, but he couldn't help it. He tried wiping his eyes, but the tears kept flowing.
He murmured, "I'm so sorry, Selena. I'm truly sorry..."
Completely bewildered, Selena tugged at Raymond's sleeve, hoping he'd say something to break the awkward moment.
But Raymond was still reeling from her earlier silence. A sharp pain shot through his heart. After a few seconds, his own tears fell silently.
Selena didn't want to have his child.
No matter what he did to make amends for his past mistakes, it wasn't enough.
Selena looked up to find Raymond crying, then turned to see Richard doing the same. She was at a loss for words.
She understood why Raymond was upset—he thought she didn't want their baby. But why was Richard making such a scene?
She reached out and gently took Raymond's fingers. His eyelashes fluttered, and he turned, silently gripping her hand but saying nothing.
Selena sighed and looked back at Richard. "Mr. Richard Smith, this was done by Mr. Lawrence Smith. Why are you apologizing? Why are you crying?"
Richard said nothing, but his tears flowed even more freely. He suddenly embraced Selena, sobbing loudly.
Selena flinched, trying to push him away, but Richard clung to her like an octopus.
She immediately called to Raymond for help. "Do something! Why are you just standing there?"
Raymond remained motionless, quietly wiping his own tears.
Left with no choice, Selena sat rigidly as Richard wept for a full ten minutes before finally composing himself.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Selena smiled faintly. "Mr. Smith, are you afraid we'll seek revenge against the Smith family?"
The question made Richard's heart sink. If he told Selena now that she was the long-lost daughter of the Smith family, she would likely despise her own identity.
He opened his mouth, feeling as though this was karma catching up to him. With a bitter smile, he shook his head. "No. I was just overwhelmed. Raymond, take her home to rest."
Raymond didn't respond, just silently led Selena toward the door. After a step, he paused, then returned to her side, crouching with his back to her.
Selena felt touched—she truly had little strength left. She leaned against his shoulder, seeing only his profile. He was so handsome. Raymond's looks were certainly easy to fall for.
But thoughts of the baby in her womb dampened any other feelings. She needed time to think.
Raymond carried her into the elevator, neither of them saying goodbye to Richard.
Richard stood alone in the hospital room for a long while before finally wiping his face and calling Lawrence.
Lawrence answered while watching over Tessa, who had finally cried herself to sleep, her eyelashes still wet. The kick to her stomach had caused her to vomit blood again.
Seeing Richard's name on his phone, Lawrence let out a cold laugh and went on the offensive as soon as he answered.
"You have the nerve to call me? Do you know your kick made Tessa vomit blood three times?"
Hearing this, Richard's anger instantly flared.
"I didn't know!" he shouted, his voice nearly breaking.
