Chapter 158 A Hint of Mockery

Selena came downstairs and found the living room empty. She had a call lined up with someone from the company at 7 PM, so she grabbed her bag from the entryway and headed out, totally missing the gifts on the table.

Meanwhile, Fiona was still in the kitchen, directing the staff to whip up a nourishing dinner for Selena, hoping it would help her recuperate. She didn't notice Selena leaving either.

Ashbourne Manor didn't have many servants. Selena rarely saw anyone else around, except for Fiona, and they barely interacted.

This was because Selena had told William she liked peace and quiet.

So William had made sure not to send too many servants over.

Raymond had just gotten out of the car when he got a call from William.

Considering William's aggressive tone and his health, Raymond didn't argue back. "Grandpa, I've arrived at Ashbourne Manor."

William finally felt relieved. With Selena's dad being sick recently, it was normal for her to be in a bad mood. As her husband, Raymond should be there to comfort her.

Raymond hung up, unbuttoned a couple of buttons on his shirt, and walked inside.

He had rushed back, having just finished several meetings when he got William's order. Already in a foul mood, the command only made him more agitated.

Raymond's shirt sleeves were rolled up to his mid-arm, showing off smooth muscle lines. His eyes were deep and piercing.

With a high nose bridge and lips pressed into a line, he pushed open the door, and the cold air almost froze him.

Fiona saw him and was initially stunned, then became respectful. "Mr. Montague."

Raymond hung his coat on a nearby rack, changed his shoes, and glanced upstairs.

For some reason, Fiona sensed a deep-seated coldness and weariness from him.

"Dinner will be ready soon. I'll go call Ms. Fair down," Fiona said.

"Okay," Raymond responded indifferently and walked straight to the sofa to sit down.

Seeing the table loaded with fancy ingredients, fine jewelry, and gemstones, Raymond frowned.

A servant brought him water and explained softly, "These are from Mr. William Montague for Ms. Fair."

Raymond didn't know much about jewelry, but anything William gave wouldn't be cheap. This pile of gifts was probably worth millions of dollars.

He sneered. Besides the funds for two rounds of financing for the Fair family, plus these occasional million-dollar gifts, what made Selena worthy of all this?

Was it her inexplicable affection or her frail body?

Raymond wasn't someone who valued appearances. If Selena had some illness, he wouldn't mock her for it. But she always looked at him with a determined, ambitious gaze, which was utterly repulsive.

Upstairs.

Fiona knocked on the door for a while but got no response.

Recalling how Selena seemed listless when she returned, she wondered if she had fallen asleep.

But now that Raymond was here, if she didn't wake Selena up, there might be another misunderstanding between them.

"Ms. Fair?" Fiona knocked on the door a few more times, cautiously.

Still no response from inside.

Although Fiona was close to Selena, she didn't dare to push the door open at this moment.

So, after waiting outside the door for a few minutes without hearing any commotion from within, Fiona reluctantly made her way downstairs.

But with Raymond downstairs, she felt caught between a rock and a hard place.

"Mr. Montague, Ms. Fair is probably not feeling well and needs to rest a bit longer," Fiona made an excuse for Selena.

But she heard Raymond chuckle lightly, though the laugh carried a hint of mockery.
