Chapter 9

The next morning, Selena slapped on some foundation to hide the bruises on her face and headed to the studio.

The studio was in a commercial building, spread across two floors.

She only worked there part-time and didn't need to clock in every day, but she had to show up for the monthly summary meeting.

Matthew, who was usually the first one there, was a no-show.

Half an hour into the meeting, Matthew finally strolled in, looking like a hot mess in the same suit from the day before.

Selena paused, twirling her pen, sensing something was up with Matthew.

"Sorry, I'm super late," Matthew said, taking the main seat. He noticed Selena's concerned look and gave a weak smile.

The others wrapped up the summary as usual.

After the meeting, Selena was about to leave with everyone else but saw Matthew still sitting there. She walked over and asked, "What's going on?"

Matthew rubbed his temples, looking exhausted. "It's something with Sarah's family."

His voice was hoarse, clearly from a sleepless night.

He hesitated, then finally said, "I'm thinking about selling the studio, but I don't know how to break it to everyone."

Selena was shocked. The studio was growing; why would he want to sell it? Matthew wasn't exactly broke.

But the studio was his baby; he wouldn't sell it unless he had no other choice.

Selena sighed, "How much do you need?"

"At least twenty million dollars," Matthew said with a bitter smile, his eyes bloodshot. "If only we had closed Raymond's deal last night, but no luck."

"I'll try again with Raymond," Selena said, grabbing her stuff. "Don't tell anyone about this yet."

Matthew sighed, "Don't stress if it doesn't work out. Last night was Sarah's fault; she's not in a good place right now. I'll apologize for her."

Leaving the conference room, Selena decided to head to the Montague Group to try and secure the deal.

Raymond was there, and she needed to talk business.

The Montague Group's HQ was in the heart of Silver Bay City, one of the tallest buildings around. From the top, all you could see was Montague property.

After registering, Selena walked into the lobby and approached the front desk.

The receptionist, seeing her unfamiliar face, smiled sweetly, "Hello, how can I help you?"

Selena replied, "I'd like to see Mr. Montague. Is he available now?"

The receptionist's smile froze, and she looked Selena up and down. "I'm sorry, but Mr. Montague only sees people by appointment."

Rejected, Selena pressed on, "What if I'm here to discuss a collaboration?"

The receptionist answered, "For business matters, please contact the business department. Any documents needing Mr. Montague's signature will be submitted to him for approval."

Selena's silence made the receptionist's gaze more dismissive. She probably thought Selena was just another woman trying to get close to Raymond.

There had been plenty of those lately.

Selena found it hard to explain; she couldn't just say she was actually Raymond's wife.

But waiting around like this wouldn't get her anywhere. She had to find a way to see Raymond.

While hesitating, her phone buzzed with a message from an unknown number: [Ms. Fair, hello, I am Mr. Montague's private lawyer. I have visited your home twice regarding the divorce agreement, but you were not there. Do you have time now?]
