Chapter 87 Making Her Call Him 'Darling'
She'd never been a fan of Megan's attitude, but Brian and Erin always put up with her, which only made Megan worse.
Brian noticed Selena wasn't willing to beg and started to panic.
"Even if Megan did it on purpose, can't we work something out?" Brian pleaded. "You know my son owes her. If she pushes for a divorce, his future is toast. Everyone in Ridgefield knows he embezzled money and borrowed from loan sharks. Who'd want to marry into our mess? Megan's the only one who doesn't care. If she ends up in jail, what are Erin and I supposed to do?"
Selena closed her eyes, feeling the weight of their struggles. She knew Brian and Erin had it rough, with Jacob and Megan burning through their money.
"Uncle Brian, even if I ask Mr. Montague, he won't budge just because of me," she said, rubbing her temples. "He's firm on this. Either we come up with one million for the car damages, or Megan goes to jail."
Brian kept pushing, "Selena, at least try. Maybe he'll cut us some slack for your sake."
Selena's patience snapped. "Uncle Brian, I've already asked. He made it clear. I have to drive now, so I'm hanging up."
She ended the call before Brian could respond.
This was the first real fallout she'd had with Brian.
When she lived with Brian and Erin, they were always kind to her, but their soft nature let Megan walk all over them.
Raymond, sitting next to her, had heard everything.
"Is that woman your relative?" he asked as soon as she hung up.
Selena felt a twinge of shame. "Yeah, she's my sister-in-law."
Raymond's eyes narrowed. "She said your cousin Jacob ran off, right?"
"Yeah, he borrowed from loan sharks."
"So she didn't divorce him?" Raymond's question hung in the air, implying that if she hadn't divorced Jacob, why was she messing around with Raymond? Didn't her family care?
Selena felt even more embarrassed. Brian still hoped Jacob would come back and have a kid with Megan.
As he said, no one else would marry Jacob now, except Megan. That's why they put up with her.
"Mr. Montague, I'm really sorry about Megan," Selena apologized, finding it hard to even say the words.
Raymond looked away, his face unreadable. "You planning to cough up the one million for her?"
Selena sighed, "I don't have that kind of money."
"Then stay out of it," Raymond said flatly.
Truth was, Selena really didn't have that kind of cash. She'd have to sell her apartment just to cover the down payment on the new place she bought. And even then, the bank approval would take a couple of weeks. In the meantime, she'd be crashing at Ashbourne Manor or living out of a hotel.
Running into Raymond at Ashbourne Manor? Yeah, that'd be awkward.
The car fell silent. Selena's phone buzzed with a message from Brian: [Selena, sorry for putting you in a tough spot. We'll handle it. Don't worry about it and get back to work.]
Instead of feeling relieved, Selena felt even more frustrated. Brian's message carried the same weight of guilt and pressure she felt from James.
She leaned back, feeling drained.
Raymond had a document on his lap, flipping through it. He was about to sign when he felt Selena's head rest on his shoulder.
He stiffened, glancing at her.
Selena looked worn out, a mix of sadness and frustration on her face. But there was a coolness to her, and her eyes were always so clear.
She must've had a rough time in Ridgefield, even her dreams seemed troubled.
In her sleep, Selena dreamed of Raymond.
In the dream, Raymond grabbed her chin, making her call him "Darlin'."
Even in her dream, she felt too tired to fight it, just muttering, "Darlin'."
Raymond was reading the document, but hearing that intimate term almost made him rip it apart.
He frowned, looking at her again.
She was out cold; it was probably just sleep talk.
Wasn't she supposed to be on bad terms with her husband? Why was she dreaming about him?
Raymond couldn't figure her out.
He looked away, feeling indifferent. It wasn't his problem.
When Selena woke up, it was already evening. She recognized the road they were on and her heart skipped a beat.
Wasn't this the way to Ashbourne Manor?
Was Raymond planning to go there tonight?
