Chapter 1404 You Won't Even Need to Lift a Finger

Jason coughed up blood again, looking so weak he seemed about to lose consciousness.

Cora quickly wiped away her tears. She had just woken up, only to come to the master bedroom and hear this news. Tessa was dying—the girl she had cherished for so many years.

"Richard, call Lawrence right away. Have him bring Tessa here. Perhaps if your father sees her, it might ease her suffering and give her a reason to live."

Richard's expression darkened. Standing in Jason's shoes, he felt a chill in his heart. If Tessa could live, what about his real sister? Could she still be alive? Besides Jason and himself, did anyone in this family even care whether his true sister lived or died?

Nevertheless, he made the call.

Lawrence arrived promptly with Tessa, carrying her on his back as she could barely walk on her own. They helped her sit beside Jason's bed, where she looked as though she might drift away at any moment.

"Lawrence, Richard, Mom—could you please leave us? I'd like to speak with Dad alone."

After they left and the door closed, Jason leaned against the headboard, his expression cold and distant.

Tessa lowered her head, malice glinting in her eyes. If she could just eliminate Jason now, the entire Smith family would fall into chaos! Then no one would stop her from reclaiming her place in the family, especially with Lawrence and Cora on her side.

Jason was her only obstacle.

She didn't know how that man had managed it, convincing the doctors to provide false documentation that made Lawrence believe she was dying. She had taken the man's drugs, which certainly made her appear desperately weak.

But dying was the last thing she wanted. She needed to live—to live better than anyone else.

She hung her head, feigning pitiful remorse. "Dad, I know you don't want to see me, but I need to say this: I truly didn't know Layla was in that car. I was only trying to get back at Selena. I'm sorry. Whatever happened, I know I was wrong, and I accept that."

Jason wasn't buying it, but he caught a whiff of perfume that made him dizzy. Was it coming from her? He was already feeling faint, and now a hot flush surged to his head.

Tessa continued her performance, claiming she had only wanted to see him one last time before she died, having lived in this house for over twenty years.

"Dad, please take care of yourself."

Jason closed his eyes, his brow furrowed in pain as he suddenly coughed up more blood.

Tessa pretended to be startled, quickly reaching for a glass of water nearby. No one knew she had added something to it.

'Die, you bastard,' she thought.

"Dad, what's wrong? Have some water. If you don't want to see me, I'll leave right away."

Jason tried to push the water away but lacked the strength.

Malice gleamed in Tessa's eyes as she attempted to force the water into his mouth, but just then, the door opened. Richard stood there with his arms crossed.

He confronted her, "What are you doing?"

She flinched, her expression faltering.

"Richard, Dad suddenly coughed up blood. I... I was just trying to give him some water."

Richard strode forward, his face filled with disgust. "Step back. You've said what you needed to say, haven't you? Lawrence said you were dying, but you look perfectly fine to me."

She took the glass, intending to help Jason drink.

But Jason wasn't so easily fooled. He tried to knock the glass away.

Tessa couldn't contain herself any longer. She struck the glass, causing water to splash onto Jason's neck.

If she didn't seize this opportunity, how else would she eliminate Jason? The man had told her that if Jason drank this, no one could save him.

But now the water had merely spilled on Jason's neck.

Furious, she picked up the empty glass, hoping to feed Jason the few remaining drops.

Jason continued coughing, feeling a burning sensation where the water had touched his skin.

Then dizziness overtook him, and he collapsed.

"Dad!"

Richard grabbed Tessa and pushed her away in disgust, preventing her from getting closer.

He shouted, "Get out!"

Lawrence witnessed this and immediately rushed over, taking Tessa into his arms.

Richard said coldly, "Lawrence, take her and go. If anything happens to Father, I swear I won't let her get away with it. Someone, take that glass for testing!"

Tessa shrank back, her voice breaking into sobs. "Richard, you think I was trying to poison Dad? Fine, test it. If there's anything harmful in that glass, I'll kill myself right here. You won't even need to lift a finger."
