Chapter 1390 Can You Be the First to Call My Name
The entire Adams family turned at Paul's call, suddenly making Ann the center of attention.
Her cheeks flushed with heat as she stood frozen in the corner.
"Mr. Adams," she addressed him formally.
Paul's brow furrowed. She called him Paul when they were alone, but now it was "Mr. Adams"?
"Come here," he insisted, clearly displeased.
Ann approached slowly, acutely aware of Emily's cold, hateful glare. Emily recognized her as the woman from that night in Paul's car. The nerve of this woman to take advantage of Paul's amnesia!
Emily stared daggers at Ann but knew this wasn't the moment to make a scene. Paul's surgery took priority. Once his memory returned, everything would stabilize.
Paul took Ann's hand, sensing her anxiety. "Are you worried about me? It's just a minor procedure. The doctor says I'll be awake in three hours."
Ann felt a wave of bitterness, but she couldn't speak freely in front of the entire Adams clan. She leaned in close, whispering in his ear, "Paul, when you wake up, will you say my name first?"
Her request was humble, her downcast eyes revealing vulnerability.
Paul squeezed her hand tightly. "Of course."
Ann sighed with relief and released his hand. "Go on then."
After a moment's thought, Paul addressed the family: "I won't be divorcing Ann. Don't try to convince me otherwise—she's my wife now."
Emily immediately erupted. "Paul! This woman has deceived you! She has no connection to you—she's just some tramp who climbed into your bed! She has no right to be your wife!"
"Silence!" Paul's face turned cold. Even without his memories, his commanding presence remained intimidating.
Emily trembled slightly, still fearful of him despite his condition.
Ann quickly grabbed his hand. Emily was right—this had been Paul's own view before losing his memory. Ann felt deeply unsettled but had no desire for confrontation.
She almost wanted to set aside her dignity and kiss Paul's cheek in front of everyone. Life had never been kind to her—she'd been abandoned and betrayed repeatedly—but she hoped Paul might be the exception.
"Paul, go have your surgery. I'll wait for you."
Paul turned to Emily. "Apologize to her."
Emily, a proud Adams daughter, was furious at being ordered to apologize to someone she considered beneath her.
"I'm sorry," she spat out. "There, happy now?"
Paul frowned. "What kind of attitude is that?"
Emily retorted, "Paul, once you've had your surgery, you'll understand everything."
Ann squeezed his hand. "Go on. I'll be waiting outside."
Not wanting to delay further, Paul nodded.
After he was sedated and wheeled into surgery, Emily could no longer contain herself. She slapped Ann hard across the face.
She snapped, "You shameless woman! Don't think I don't know about your relationship with Paul—how you begged for his attention! I will never allow someone like you to become his wife. Once Paul wakes up, he'll see how disgusting you truly are."
The other Adams family members stared at Ann as if she were a criminal.
Ann held her stinging cheek, not daring to retaliate. She was alone against the entire Adams clan—a fight she couldn't win.
Among the group was Kai, Paul's cousin, who had harassed Ann previously. During Paul's presumed death, Kai had been particularly gleeful, despite owning minimal shares in the company. He hadn't missed any opportunity to mock Emily.
"Careful, Emily. Paul might want revenge for damaging that pretty face when he wakes up." He approached Ann with a smirk. "Ann, right? Remember me? Last time, we almost..."
He paused suggestively, his gaze wandering over her body.
Ann certainly remembered him. During their last encounter, Kai had cornered her against a tree. If she hadn't escaped, he would have likely assaulted her.
Kai was a playboy without principles who constantly opposed Paul. Now that he knew of her connection to Paul, he would surely pursue her more aggressively.
