Chapter 86 She Should Face the Consequences
Selena took a deep breath and glanced at Raymond. "Mr. Montague, if you're heading back to Silver Bay City today, how about I give you a ride?"
Megan's eyes went wide, and she immediately freaked out. So this was Selena's game all along.
Megan snapped, "Oh, so you're trying to seduce Mr. Montague behind your husband's back! No wonder you came back after leaving. I bet you were the one who trashed the car, just waiting for this chance. How low can you get!"
There weren't many people at the entrance of Harmony Garden, but Megan's outburst got everyone's attention.
Selena's brow twitched, and she pressed her lips together.
If Megan wasn't her so-called sister-in-law, Selena would've slapped her already. But she respected Brian and Erin.
If Megan wanted to stir up trouble, fine.
Megan knew this and felt pretty smug.
Megan sneered, "I thought college grads were supposed to be classy, turns out you're just a slut cheating on your husband. I feel bad for him. Does he know you're out here chasing men? Did I hit a nerve?"
Seeing Selena stay quiet, Megan turned to Raymond with a grin. "Mr. Montague, you should see this woman's true colors. She probably followed you to Ridgefield this time."
Selena laughed in frustration. Everyone knew she came to mourn Barbara, but now Megan was twisting the story.
Selena realized there was no point in talking to Megan.
Megan was about to keep going when Raymond said to someone nearby, "Check the surveillance."
John, standing next to him, was also annoyed. This delay meant they'd get back to Silver Bay City even later.
"This car is worth $2 million. The person responsible will definitely go to jail. We've already called the Montague Group's lawyers from Silver Bay City. The initial damage estimate is no less than $1 million. We demand full compensation from the perpetrator and won't accept any form of settlement." John's words echoed Raymond's stance.
Raymond looked at Selena. "Let's go."
Megan was stunned.
Just a window and a few tires, how could it cost $1 million? Shouldn't it be just a few thousand dollars?
Megan panicked, looked around, and saw the surveillance cameras at the entrance. Her legs went weak, and she quickly followed them.
Megan said, feeling guilty, "Mr. Montague, doesn't your car have insurance? The insurance company could cover it, right? $1 million is a lot; it's more than most people make in a lifetime."
Raymond didn't even look her way and got into Selena's car.
John naturally took the driver's seat, leaving Selena to sit in the back.
Megan hurriedly tried to knock on the window, but John, clearly done with her nonsense, hit the gas.
Selena had come back to grab her charger, but now she had to let it go.
Megan, who had been so smug just moments ago, turned pale, her mind racing with thoughts of the $1 million.
How could she pay it back? What was she going to do?
She trembled all over, quickly got into her car, and sped home.
Brian and Erin saw her pale face and immediately asked, "Megan, what's wrong?"
Megan was too scared to speak. She had never seen $1 million in her life, let alone afford to pay it back.
If she didn't pay, and Raymond's lawyer showed up, she would go to jail.
The more Megan thought about it, the more terrified she became, unable to speak, her face wet with tears.
Brian and Erin were still clueless until the police arrived and slapped silver handcuffs on Megan's wrists.
Megan begged through her tears, "Dad, Mom, help me. I didn't know that car would cost so much. I thought a few thousand dollars would cover it. Call Selena; she's close with Mr. Montague. If you beg her, she'll definitely help me!"
Megan felt a storm of anger and resentment brewing inside her. "One million dollars, how can I pay one million dollars! Selena is probably in the car with Mr. Montague right now, doing who knows what. How shameless! If it weren't for her, I wouldn't have done this!"
Brian and Erin panicked when they saw the police. From the officers' brief explanation, they finally understood what had happened. Hearing that Selena was in the car with Raymond, Brian had no choice but to swallow his pride and call her.
Selena felt a surge of irritation when she saw Brian's call, but she couldn't ignore it since he was her uncle.
Selena answered, "Uncle Brian."
Brian said, "Is Mr. Montague in the car with you? If you are close to him, can you ask him to go easy on Megan? She didn't mean to smash the car and probably didn't know how much it was worth. Can we avoid taking this to court?"
Selena had somewhat expected this, but hearing Brian's request still felt absurd.
Selena replied, "Uncle Brian, after smashing the car, she volunteered to take Mr. Montague out in your car, and her timing was so perfect. Do you really believe she didn't do it on purpose? Talking to me won't help. The car's value is what it is. If she dared to smash it, she should face the consequences."
