Chapter 1542 How Could I Marry Selena If the Smiths Suffered?

But he had already left for Vesperia. What could she do now?

She took a deep breath, a thousand thoughts condensing into a single message: [Stay safe.]

Fearing her anger, he texted: [Don't worry, Selena. I'll be back as soon as I can. I've just arrived and don't know the situation here. I'm concerned about being tracked, so my phone will be on intermittently. If you can't reach me, please don't panic—I'll update you on my progress every three days. Okay?]

What choice did she have? Selena understood his urgency—Jason was already in grave danger. With Octavia in her current state, they needed to investigate the research facility immediately.

She replied: [OK.]

Raymond's heart clenched when he saw her terse response. He knew she was upset. Never skilled with emojis, he scrolled through the options, finally selecting several kiss emojis after much deliberation.

Even in her anger, Selena couldn't help but soften at the sight of them.

Having reassured her, Raymond immediately powered off his phone.

Two hours later, his man returned.

"Mr. Montague, that hospital has surveillance cameras every few yards. That's excessive for an ordinary medical facility," he reported.

More than excessive—in a place like Arcturus with its backward infrastructure, surveillance equipment was typically reserved for only the most critical locations. A hospital with so many cameras might as well have a sign declaring: "Something suspicious here."

"Any other findings?" Raymond asked.

"Yes. Typically, donated bodies for medical research would be clearly labeled with their intended purpose, but this hospital has no detailed records for these remains. When I posed as a patient and 'accidentally' wandered into the morgue, armed guards escorted me out."

"Additionally, the main administrators appear normal at first glance, but deeper investigation revealed they're all using purchased identities."

Identity purchasing was a specialty of the underground fighting rings. They exploited local census loopholes to create fictional people in population records—identities that could then be sold. The fighting rings sold dozens each year.

A wanted assassin, for instance, could destroy his face and live under a new identity after purchasing one. These identities weren't cheap—they had to fool monitoring systems.

Raymond's men discovered this quickly only because the fighting ring kept records of every identity sold. His people, with their photographic memories, immediately recognized these doctors' profiles as sold identities.

After integrating all the intelligence and comparing it with the map's markings, Raymond confirmed this location was correct. The hospital was indeed collaborating with the research facility.

His finger moved to another position on the map. "At dawn, disguise yourselves as refugees and check this place. Be careful not to contract any diseases."

Arcturus always had numerous refugees. His target was a welfare center providing refugee housing—thirty-some buildings reportedly funded by a great benefactor whom local Arcturus officials treated as an honored guest.

The map, however, indicated this supposed benefactor was actually an insider from the research facility. These people were responsible for identifying talented individuals and manipulating them into the research facility as test subjects.

The map didn't specify how to enter the facility, suggesting unauthorized entry was impossible. They would need cunning.

Raymond hadn't shared this map with others, suspecting it might be a trap. If he told the Smith family and they suffered heavy losses, how could he ever hope to marry Selena? Lawrence and Richard already disliked him—he needed to improve their impression. The best approach was to scout ahead himself.

"Once you're inside, don't act rashly. Just observe the personnel movement patterns," he instructed.

"Understood," they replied.

Raymond nodded, dismissing them to rest.
