Chapter 1549 Everyone Has Obsessions
The motorcycle came to a stop in the city center.
Unlike the towering skyscrapers of metropolitan areas, Arcturus's tallest buildings barely reached fifteen stories.
What Selena didn't realize was that Raymond was staying in this very district—the tallest structures she could see were actually part of the welfare center.
By now, Raymond had already gone to the airport to meet her. The flight had been showing as delayed, but suddenly all information had vanished from the system. After several inquiries, he discovered Selena had already left.
In Arcturus, surveillance cameras were scarce. He'd only managed to see footage of Selena and a woman in a hat getting into a car, but their destination remained a mystery.
Anxiety gnawed at him as he ordered a search of all available camera footage along possible routes. Finally, they spotted traces of Selena heading toward the city where he was staying.
Relief washed over him momentarily, but his numerous calls went straight to voicemail—her phone was likely dead.
Raymond rushed back to the city and deployed his people to continue the search.
With the growing chaos and many surveillance systems offline, finding her was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
What frustrated him most was Arcturus's abysmal internet penetration rate of less than twenty percent. Unlike in Mystic Prison, he couldn't leverage digital advertising to locate her.
Selena remained oblivious to Raymond's frantic search. She only discovered her phone had died after reaching the hotel. By some stroke of fate, she and the hat-wearing woman from earlier had rooms on the same floor.
Arcturus was vast, and Selena had no idea which specific city Raymond was in. She shared a meal with her new acquaintance, but barely managed a few bites before her stomach revolted.
The unfamiliar food was a shock to her system after being pampered with fine cuisine at the Smith family residence. Her pregnancy had made her body more sensitive than usual.
"Are you alright? Could it be food poisoning? This hotel's food is supposed to be decent," the woman asked, concern evident in her voice despite her otherwise cool demeanor.
Selena rinsed her mouth with water, her face ashen. "I'm just not used to these flavors."
"I'll get you some Stellarian food. Wait here," the woman said, promptly leaving the room.
Only then did Selena notice something about her companion—beneath her helpful exterior lay a sharp, almost clinical intensity. Her eyes lacked warmth, as though her friendliness was a carefully constructed facade. But Selena was too nauseated to dwell on this observation as acid continued to rise in her throat.
The woman returned with a bowl of oatmeal and placed it before her. "Here, try this."
"Thank you," Selena managed, eating about half the bowl before her stomach finally settled.
As the woman prepared to leave, Selena asked, "Where are you planning to look for your brother? Is he in this city?"
"I don't know. He disappeared fifteen years ago when he was just a toddler. I'm twenty-six now, which would make him eighteen, but I only remember him as a two or three-year-old," she replied, her mouth tightening slightly. "For fifteen years, I never stopped searching. I finally discovered who sold him and learned he was brought to Arcturus."
Selena couldn't imagine how a child sold into Arcturus could possibly survive, but kept her doubts to herself.
"I have this overwhelming feeling that he's alive," the woman continued, "perhaps waiting for me to rescue him."
After the woman left, Selena charged her phone and contacted Raymond. He'd been nearly out of his mind with worry, and the relief in his voice was palpable beneath his anger.
"Where are you?" he demanded, his tone dark with suppressed emotion.
Recognizing his anger, Selena quickly gave him her hotel information.
"I'll be there in thirty minutes. Stay in your room. Don't go anywhere," he ordered before abruptly ending the call.
Selena waited on the edge of the bed. Though he'd said thirty minutes, Raymond arrived in twenty.
She peered through the peephole, confirmed it was him, and opened the door to find him wearing a hat pulled low over his face, shadowing his expression.
